Meet Calvin Cahall | Product Development Manager & Wandering Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin Cahall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, what are you inspired by?
Science. A friend and I wrote the code used to generate these digital artworks that are based on the the laws motion and conservation of energy. The thought was to create something that people could enjoy without having to understand the system behind it but would also appreciate it more once it was thoroughly explained. I wouldn’t exactly consider myself ‘creative’ in the general artistic sense, but I enjoy trying to put a scientific or functional spin on artworks.

What should our readers know about your business?
At Carbyne, we have a broad range of interests that can seem like we’re all over the map. I started the business with the end goal of eventually turning it into a craft beer brewery but enjoy many other things like creating unique works. Opening a brewery is very capital intensive so while I save and plan for that day, I wanted to explore and share other things that I could create. One of my first interests is writing computer code, because I’m a nerd and proud of it. A while back, a colleague of mine and I started working on a program that would create a unique image that represents the journey of two people coming together in love. Each image is unique to the date that is to be celebrated (meeting date, wedding date, child’s birth, etc.). Recently I began dipping my toes into wood working and will be releasing some of those creations as products as well.
We’re still very young only having been in business for 1 year, but we’ve learned quite a bit in that time. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that you have to pay for quality. Whether that is payment is in time that you are working on something (artwork, website, accounting structure, etc.) or money you are paying for a service.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really enjoy seeing new places and trying new beers (I’m a bit of a picky eater, so I’ll branch out on beverages). We’d probably start by visiting “Outlaw Wings” and “I <Hop symbol> IPA” in Broomfield. Outlaw has the best dry rub wings I’ve ever eaten and “I Hop IPA” always has a variety of beers on tap. I usually roll their 24-sided dice and let fate decide what I’m going to try that evening.
Hiking is a frequent activity for me too. For someone visiting, the short trail to the top of Sugar Loaf is one of the best views you can get for the effort; always a crowd pleaser.
For dinner one night, we would definitely check out Teocalli’s in Lafayette. Their tacos are the best around.
Another great place to hangout is Acreage by Stem Ciders. I’m less of a cider fan, but the view of the mountains from their patio with a pretzel and bratwurst is amazing.
To get a bit further out into the mountains, we’d probably visit Idaho Springs and maybe do a little bit of fly fishing in clear creek.
If they’re feeling up to it, we would take them up a 14-er to see some breathtaking views. Maybe Quandary Peak.
And last but not least, we would take a stroll down pearl street for a bit of shopping and site seeing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife who has always been there for me from standing by when putting in the hours of writing code to poking fun at my inexperience with social media.
