We had the good fortune of connecting with Candayce Abney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candayce, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always enjoyed photography growing up, taking family and landscape photos. Back then, I only used disposable cameras and cellphones. I didn’t decide to invest in an interchangeable lens camera until my fiancé (boyfriend at the time) encouraged me to buy my first camera and lenses. Using better equipment during our fall photo trip back in 2016 opened up a whole new creative outlet for me. I instantly got addicted to chasing the next best shot! We even took our first trip to Iceland a few months later. Talk about a photographer’s paradise! I exclusively posted my photos on my Instagram account that I created back in September of 2016. Eventually, I decided to start posting my photography on other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. I got more involved with the Colorado based photography groups on Facebook. That’s when I started getting more exposure and even started getting questions like, “How can I purchase a print?” That’s what got me motivated to get my website and online store up and running. Since I am out there all the time taking photos already, I thought to myself, why not? Photography is not my hobby, It’s my passion!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After I learned the basics of landscape photography, specifically composition and learning my camera inside and out I decided to branch out into astrophotography. I instantly fell in love! The great Milky Way chase is truly an addiction! Later on, I even got into more advanced astrophotography techniques such as stacking and tracking. I would like to pursue deep space photography next. I am extremely active in the photography community on Facebook as I am a moderator and admin for several groups. It is very important to me to promote other photographers and their work and to help people connect with likeminded individuals. Which is why I decided to create my own community/feature page called, Colorful Colorado Collective, towards the end of last year. I organize this group with 4 other talented local photographers and I’m also proud to call them my friends. My photography journey definitely had some bumps in the road. After I had my first daughter at the end of 2017, I found that I was traveling a lot less. It took some adjustments to learn how to go on long photography trips and go camping with a young child. It’s definitely a struggle at times but we’ve learned to appreciate this new chapter in our lives. We know getting her out there and experiencing the great outdoors at an early age will teach her to love and respect the outdoor lifestyle as much as we do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was here visiting me, I would take them on a week long, tent camping road trip during the summer. We would drive to Twin Lakes from Colorado Springs and camp around there. Since we’re tent camping, we will plan our own meals for the week. Then we would head over to Independence Pass to enjoy the scenic views and spend the evening at Maroon Bells. We would continue on towards Kebler Pass and Crested Butte to view and photograph wildflowers. After all, it is the Wildflower Capital of Colorado! The remaining days we would spend in the Ridgway area photographing the San Juan Mountains and soaking in all the gorgeous scenery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Luckily, I have a lot of people in my life who support and encourage me such as my incredible friends and family. But my fiancé, Lars Leber is by far my biggest supporter, encourager and source of inspiration. Not only is he the love of my life, but he is also my best friend, mentor and travel companion. It’s nice that we both love photography so much that we plan fun family trips around it. We’re always exploring new places in Colorado and beyond! We hope we can pass our love for photography down to our daughter, Emily.
