We had the good fortune of connecting with Candler English and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candler, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up just south of Atlanta in the suburbs. The most impactful creative asset to me through were the farmlands that were the backdrop of our suburban town. As boy, I would run through fields, woods, creeks, and swamps, all in the name of adventure. As a painter and a songwriter, the pastoral has always shown itself as a major inspiration in my songwriting and visual art making.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Much of my work embodies a sense of playfulness. Creative innocence has always been a source of inspiration to me and I tend to have a natural pull to embody that in my work. I look to a lot of folk artists and outsider art for inspiration. My work often utilizes storytelling, spirituality, and symbolism to create a unique image through the use of collage, painting, and found objects. My songwriting embodies much of the same themes that my visual art does. Through grass roots songwriting and folk rock instrumentation, I enjoy inviting the listener into stories that uplift, empathize, and hopefully connect us as humans.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were showing off Colorado Springs to someone, I would likely take them through Old Colorado City and straight into the Michael German Museum off Colorado Av. I recently stumbled in on accident and was met with a wild display of a miniature New York City that spanned many rooms. Next on the list would be to go through Frankly Coffee and then to Dozo Sushi Bar off 8th Street.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Training Ground Colorado. Training Ground is an adventure mens ministry that has been essential in facilitating growth in me, spiritually, emotionally, and creatively.
