Meet Cara And Will Brethauer | Wedding Photographer & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cara And Will Brethauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cara and Will, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
We both have had a passion for creativity from a young age, whether drawing, watercoloring, or snapping photos for fun. Will’s junior year of high school, however, put everything into perspective for him — he had a serious injury during a soccer game, causing him to sit out of sports for a while. This was heartbreaking for him at the time, as sports were his life. A few weeks after his injury, his dad encouraged him to pick up a camera since he wasn’t able to play sports. From there, Will documented school events and sporting events and began interning with a wedding videographer. He quickly fell in love with sharing stories through the lens. Will went on to major in film in college, knowing he wanted to pursue a career that he loved every day.

I, on the other hand (Cara), didn’t find my love for photography until I started dating Will. Although I enjoyed capturing meaningful moments and taking pictures, I found a passion for photography when Will taught me the more technical side of it. I majored in writing in college, so I had a passion for storytelling like Will. Upon my college graduation, I pursued a corporate writing career — while Will and I also ran our photography business — but the full-time job drained me and didn’t give the same creative outlet that photography did. I left my corporate job and pursued our photography business full time, and it was the best decision we EVER made!

We have the unique opportunity to tell stories through photo and video, and we are beyond grateful for the opportunity. Every day, we tell someone’s story in a unique way. It’s perhaps an unpredictable and unconventional career, but we wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. We thank God for this opportunity to be able to do the thing we love each and every day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’re a husband and wife photographer and videographer team based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado. We put our heart and soul into everything we do, and we absolutely thrive when we have the opportunity to tell our couples’ stories through photo and video.

Photography isn’t simply clicking a button or striking a pose — it’s an art that allows you to remember the emotions and feelings of your biggest moments. Our passion is to create a day with our couples that is stunning, full of love, and unique to them. When our couples look at their photos or video from their wedding day, we want them to see that it was authentic and real to who they are as a couple.

Within this, we are more focused on the couple’s story as opposed to only focusing on ensuring they have a beautiful gallery. The couple’s love for each other is the most important thing, and we truly want to incorporate this love into their photos and videos. Our sessions are more focused on prompting as opposed to posing so the couple can be their most authentic selves — this creates the perfect blend of documentary and editorial photography that sets our photos apart. We are beyond thankful to document our couple’s love, and this opportunity isn’t something we take lightly.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever we have had family or friends visit us in Colorado Springs, there are a few go-to spots we like to take them. If we want to go out on an adventure, we like to do some easy off-roading up Mount Herman or take Gold Camp Road leading to Helen Hunt Falls. If they have never been to Garden of the Gods, that is always a classic spot to take someone, and you can even take the off-road trail Rampart Range Road to the top where you can get a really amazing view of the city of Colorado Springs. We also love coffee shops, and a few of our favorite local spots are Loyal Coffee, Third Space Coffee, and Switchbacks Coffee Roasters.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would not be where we are today without the support, love, and encouragement of each of our parents. They have been our biggest cheerleader every step of the way and have offered advice and ideas that have helped us reach our fullest potential. We are beyond grateful for their unwavering support!
