Meet Carolina/ Carol Brizuela | Artist, Mover, Story teller, Space holder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina/Carol Brizuela and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina/Carol, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Throughout my life, I’ve explored numerous creative mediums as a way to express myself. There’s a certain thrill that comes with taking this passion seriously, almost like a rebellion against the familiar, standard career choice. However, the truth is that creativity runs deep within me; it’s an integral part of who I am. For me, it provides a sense of empowerment through choice. As someone with various passions and interests, I enjoy exploring different avenues, often discovering how they intertwine with one another.
In my work, I seek specific elements that bring me fulfillment. When my endeavors incorporate aspects like the role of a space holder, self-care, inclusion, play, creative expression/ liberation, and fostering connections, it reassures me that I am heading in the right direction.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a freelance artist offering a diverse range of services, including photography, makeup, and choreography. I support ceremonies, coming of age, and threshold experiences such as weddings, quinceañeras, competition, and stage performances.
My journey in dance choreography began during my time working with youth in Southern California. I joined the dance team in middle school and embarked on my choreography journey at the age of 13, collaborating closely with my mentor Jesse Mendoza, who had been a significant influence since my student days at that same school.
My initial professional experience outside of being an assistant director and contemporary choreographer was at my uncle’s photography studio, Photo Studio Cervantes. Although I was not heavily involved in hands-on tasks at that time, immersing myself in the creative environment was crucial for my personal growth. Throughout my adolescence, creativity served as a vital resource, particularly during challenging moments. Dance became my medicine and joining the dance team was a safe space during a period of time when I was often alone; allowing me to express my emotions and share my experiences through movement.
As I developed a distinctive style of choreography that resonated within my community, I recognized the importance of shifting my focus to serve others, particularly the youth. My role as a contemporary choreographer enabled me to convey meaningful themes through movement, emphasizing the message that no one is alone. Experiencing a significant change in perspective was transformative for me when I came to understand that dance serves as a form of therapy. It filled me with joy to recognize that something so impactful for my own healing could be utilised as a resource to assist others in their own journeys. The way I connected with my students felt akin to a gardener nurturing a beautiful garden, dedicating time and care to help each one flourish in their own unique way and as a collective. This commitment to connectivity—both with oneself and with others—has become a fundamental value in my life. By integrating my competitive dance background with the somatic practitioner certification, I received from my mentor, Melissa Michaels, I aim to be a conscious movement guide and space holder in my teaching and workshops. This approach also compliments my work as a photographer, where I strive to intuitively gauge how to support and empower individuals during their sessions.
I particularly enjoy collaborating with those who may feel awkward or shy, as I can relate to those feelings myself. Being able to connect with them on that level and navigate through the journey of our time together and track what arises is truly a rewarding experience for me.
The challenges I encounter today, often manifest as self-sabotaging behaviors that emerge when I perceive that I am falling short of both external and internal expectations. The issue of self-worth frequently arises, particularly in my journey as an artist, where such feelings can be more prevalent than one might wish. However, by acknowledging these emotions as they surface, I find opportunities for reflection and the necessary space to process the feelings that must be addressed to navigate through these difficult moments; as well as community support. A significant portion of my artistic expression stems from the challenges I faced during my teenage years. The creative outlets I discovered served as a healing balm for the emotional scars I carried from that period, which is why I prioritize creating a nurturing and secure environment for those in my care.
This emphasis on safety and connection is not just a professional obligation for me; it is deeply personal. I understand the importance of feeling seen and safe, as these elements were crucial in my own journey. It is my hope that by fostering this sense of safety, I can help others navigate their own struggles and find solace while allowing them to express themselves freely.
I understand that the resources I possess are a result of the relationships I have cultivated over the years. My chosen family has been instrumental in supporting me as I confront the negative inner dialogue that suggests I am inadequate. Their encouragement and understanding have been vital in helping me to challenge and work through these detrimental thoughts, allowing me to embrace my worth and continue my artistic journey with greater confidence.
I engage with a variety of group sizes, from small, close-knit gatherings to larger assemblies. Each setting offers its own unique dynamics, and I find joy in adapting my approach to suit the needs of the participants. The smaller groups allow for deeper connections, fostering an environment where meaningful conversations can flourish. This intimacy often leads to a richer understanding of how I can best assist each individual, creating a supportive atmosphere that encourages growth and exploration.
In one-on-one photography sessions, I collaborate with clients who have a clear vision of their ideal photoshoot, aiming to help them feel their absolute best. By incorporating playful elements, such as water, I aim to infuse the experience with joy and spontaneity, resulting in a magical collection of images that reflect their true spirit. This style not only enhances the visual outcome but also creates lasting memories for my clients.
My one-on-one dance sessions allow me to craft choreography that resonates with the personal themes my clients are exploring in their lives. Each dance piece becomes a unique expression of their journey, enabling them to connect physically and emotionally with their movements.
This practice, which draws on my self-developed skills, has been described as narrative therapy by my best friend Christina, a somatic therapist. A pivotal moment in my life occurred when I offered her a dance session, leading me to realize the idea that storytelling through movement is at the heart of what I do. My best friend Zae, a talented artist, has also been a significant source of support and insight on my creative journey.
Dance is what initially united us, and it remains an essential source of nourishment for our spirits. This is why I am so passionate about my work and the connections it fosters.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being an ambivert, I flourish in the harmony of social gatherings and quiet moments. My preferred way of expressing love is through quality time, so the chance to host my closest friends would be a dream come true!
If my best friends were to visit for a week, I would definitely take them to The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse. Dushanbe holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the first spots I discovered when I traveled here in the summer. It’s a charming location that brings back fond memories.
I would love to organize a picnic by a serene body of water, perhaps at McIntosh Lake or Dickens Farm Nature Area, which would be a lovely way to land together.
Embarking on a scenic drive into the mountains to fully embrace the beauty of nature is essential and stumbling upon a farmers’ market on the way down, would be a sweet bonus.
If we could swing it, making time to relax at the hot springs for a day soaking in the warm waters would be amazing!
Another must-visit is Sandy’s Coffee and Tea, a cozy little café close to my home in Longmont that has an artsy loft atmosphere, perfect for co-working or simply enjoying coffee and pastries after some outdoor adventures.
Strolling along Main Street and checking out Magic Fairy Candles would be a fun outing for some unique finds. In the evening, I imagine us gathering around a fire under the stars, inviting some more of our friends to join us, play some music, and have a little dance party.
We are bound to have a little skincare moment; a face mask night would be a great way to unwind, followed by pulling some tarot cards. To cap off our time together, I would host a classic movie night at home, complete with a projector, a charcuterie board, and a nice bottle of wine.
We are big fans of Motomaki in Boulder. We’ve agreed, it must become a tradition for us to visit before we part ways.
It’s a comforting ritual that we look forward to, knowing it marks the end of our time together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful chosen family who supports me wholeheartedly. Many of these amazing individuals entered my life through the Golden Bridge community, thanks to Melissa Michaels. Additionally, my point of contact when I joined the Rites of Passage somatic summer program, known as Surfing the Creative, was Tal Liza Mizrahi- both beautiful, fiery, heart-forward beings!
I am especially grateful for my Longmont family, who play a significant role in my journey. Incredibly compassionate and generous humans. These individuals not only uplift me and others but they also contribute their own special gifts and offerings to the world. The loving push I receive from my family and friends fuels my passion for the work I do. I would also like to express my gratitude to one of the kindest souls I know, Rachael Bonaiuto, for her support and connecting me with you all at ShoutoutColorado.
As for my heart of hearts, I would like to honor this constellation of remarkable humans, including Zae Jorden, Christina Shore, Abigail Lubahn, Jennie Gershater, and Jesse Mendoza, who have profoundly shaped who I am today. Their influence is a key reason I strive to be my best self and do what I love to do. Thank you family for believing in me, supporting and loving me.
Your encouragement inspires me to strive for my dreams and to continue to show up the best way I can.
I am truly blessed.
Thank you!
