We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Even though we’re a small business, we believe that we can have a positive impact and make a difference in the outdoor community.
As an outdoor brand, we think it’s important to give back to organizations that protect our planet. That’s why we donate to a variety of causes that we care about deeply. Oso Supply Co’s first product was a climbing bag, so when we started looking for ways to give back, we immediately thought of Access Fund, an organization that advocates for sustainable access and conservation of America’s climbing areas. We also donate a portion of every sale to 1% for the Planet and have formed partnerships with Washington’s National Parks Fund and The Conservation Alliance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is primarily driven by what I’m excited about or something beautiful or amazing that I’ve seen or experienced that I want to highlight. I spend a lot of my free time outside in nature. I’m either in the middle of some type of outdoor adventure or daydreaming about what’s next. I’ve found that creating helps me continue to experience those places and moments even after the adventure has come to and end.
As I’ve been building a brand, I’ve prioritized connecting with likeminded artists who have their own stories to tell. I think we all have a unique relationship with the outdoors and outdoor hobbies and that’s reflected in the diverse art across the gear in our shop. Different perspectives but shared values.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As an outdoorsy person running an outdoor brand, I think it’s only appropriate that I take visitors on an outdoor adventure. I feel like any weeklong trip to Colorado would be incomplete without visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. My favorite hike is the trail to Mount Ida. Most of the trail follows the Continental Divide and you get panoramic views of the park too!
As for food, I’m a sucker for good tacos and burritos so we’re definitely going to El Taco de Mexico. It’s an unassuming building, but some of the best Mexican food you’ll find in Denver. For something slightly more upscale, I’d go with Work & Class.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m blessed to have an incredible community of friends and family who are constantly providing support and encouragement. It’s cliche to say that I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, but it’s the honest truth. I’ve been particularly amazed and humbled by how much my community has grown as the brand has matured. Whether it’s collaborating with other artists and small business owners, or receiving kind notes from customers or outdoor lovers who discover the brand, I’m finding sparks of joy and motivation every day.
