We had the good fortune of connecting with Cass Haze and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cass, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m originally from the south Bay Area of California. I had the beach and the redwoods as my playground and San Francisco was only an hour away. This had a huge impact on my upbringing because I had an immediate connection to nature and the ocean. I also had the best of both worlds: beautiful landscapes and a vibrant city.
The foggy, forested coastlines of my home became a big source of inspiration to me. It was a place where I felt the most calm and at peace. My relationship to the ocean and water became a source of healing for my anxiety. Any time I felt anxious or overwhelmed, I would try to simulate the ocean in my bathtub. This is what ultimately sparked the inspiration to create Lunalux Botanicals.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the sole creator and owner of Lunalux Botanicals, which is an all-natural bath and body company that promotes turning your self-care practices into rituals. It started initially with our Moon Ritual Bath Soaks and has since grown to include scrubs and face masks. One thing I take pride in with Lunalux Botanicals is the handmade and small-batch nature of the products. I’m a creator, maker, crafter, and DIYer. I thrive on making things from raw materials because I think the process of turning one thing into another is really beautiful. I find this beauty in everything I make. When you make something by hand, you’re infusing it with your own love, care, and energy. This is what sets handmade items apart from commercially produced products. The recipient of the handmade item can feel all that the maker put into it, and it’s a beautiful way to share love.
Lunalux gave me the opportunity to be a maker for a living, which is a dream for me and is something I didn’t think was possible. It took me a long time to realize that I was meant to be my own boss. I love the idea of stability and security, but being self-employed did not fit into those boxes, so I easily dismissed it. Lunalux Botanicals was a passion project for a few years while I was worked in a corporate office. It wasn’t until this year when I made the leap to focus solely on Lunalux Botanicals, and though terrifying, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever friends or family come into town, Steuben’s, City O City, Watercourse, Jelly, and Denver Biscuit Co are usually our go-tos for eating out. For coffee, I love Amethyst and Corvus Coffee Roasters. St. Marks/Thin Man are some of my all-time favorite hangout spots. Larger day adventures would likely be spent at the Denver Botanical Gardens, the DAM, or maybe a good movie at the Esquire.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, who taught me about the ocean and who has been supportive of every venture I’ve set out on. My partner, who has encouraged and supported me to become the best version of myself.
To Sadie, whose herbalism workshops at RitualCravt jumpstarted my journey into herbal medicine and natural healing.
Also, to the incredible community of makers, artists, and magical workers here in the Denver community. I have so much compassion and respect for all of you!
All of my friends and family have shown me nothing but love and support since I’ve started Lunalux and I am so incredibly fortunate to have them all in my lives!
