We had the good fortune of connecting with Cat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cat, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My journey with candle-making began with both a creative spark and a personal need. As someone who’s always loved candles, I face a dilemma as chronic migraines make me hypersensitive to most candles and home fragrances on the market. Rather than giving up this cozy comfort, I decided to create something that would work for me and others who are just as sensitive to scent. Drawing on my nursing background, I carefully researched the common triggers in candles and home fragrances that often cause headaches. I then crafted our product line specifically to eliminate these problematic ingredients, making our products safer for everyday home use.

Mother Wolf Candle Co. grew from a foundation of wanting to be an intentional brand. From our thoughtfully formulated products, efforts to be more environmentally conscious, and passionate support of wolf and wolf-dog education, rescue, and conservation efforts – I pour my heart into every aspect of this business. Running Mother Wolf Candle Co. has changed my life in the best ways. It gives me the freedom to spend more time with our three huskies and also to reconnect with nature—something the dogs and I love doing together. I have really enjoyed building this business, especially when I get to talk with customers who’ve been in the same boat as me, looking for home fragrances that won’t trigger their sensitivities. There’s something really special about helping someone enjoy candles again when they thought they couldn’t. Those moments make all the hard work behind the scenes completely worth it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I created Mother Wolf Candle Co. with the belief that everyone should be able to bring a piece of the outdoors into their home, especially those who’ve had to give up traditional candles and home fragrances due to sensitivities. Scent blending is a creative art form that often goes unrecognized. Creating a truly meaningful sensory experience requires patience, intuition, and a recreation of memory. Every scent I craft is born from genuine nature experiences – whether it’s recreating the crisp mountain air from Rocky Mountain adventures or rediscovering the earthy forest floors of the Pacific Northwest, each wilderness adventure has a uniquely inspired sensory memory. Our scents are blended with intention to transport our customers back into the wild, offering them that same sense of warmth and grounding that connecting with nature provides.

Our brand is a visual representation of nature’s inspiring color and sensory palette – from our earth-toned vessels to our array of nature-inspired fragrances. I have intentionally chosen to weave eco-conscious thinking into every aspect of the business, carefully selecting ingredients and packaging with environmental impact in mind. And through our give-back program, we stay committed to our mission of creating products that not only delight our customers but also help protect the wild places that inspire me. This journey has come with its challenges, especially when balancing quality and an eco-concious approach while still keeping our products accessible. Yet each hurdle has only strengthened my dedication to crafting intentional products and building a truly nature-connected brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My perfect Colorado experience begins with a crisp fall morning drive through Mt. Blue Sky scenic byway, stopping at Mt. Goliath Natural Area to witness a breathtaking mountain sunrise. From there, we would hit the trails in the Blue Sky wilderness, perhaps taking in the serene beauty of Echo Lake before descending to Idaho Springs for a well-earned craft beer and burger at Tommyknockers Brewery.

Our mountain adventure would continue as we find ourselves winding our way up through Guanella Pass, basking in the majestic forests of aspen leaves showing off their golden fall colors. If we’re lucky, maybe we spot a herd of mountain goats along our drive and chirp at a few marmots along the way. The trip would culminate with setting up camp in the pass, squeezing in some day hikes, and enjoying every beautiful moment the Rocky Mountain fall season has to offer. This adventure would not be complete without bringing a husky (or two) of course to enjoy the mountains with us.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been fortunate to have many mentors and supporters throughout my journey, however, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my partner, Ben. During a time when I wasn’t sure what my next career step in life would be, he encouraged me to think outside the box and start my own business. His unwavering belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to take the leap, and his ongoing support keeps me going through all the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Mother Wolf Candle Co. might have been my vision, but it’s become our shared adventure. He’s not only my biggest supporter behind the scenes but also the best dog dad to our three huskies.
