We had the good fortune of connecting with Manas Itene and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Manas, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
Leaving my family behind and everything I own to pursue my musical dream, to tour the world and drum on stage to thousands of people.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For all of my life I’ve been so focussed on the drums and drumming.

When you love something so much everything else comes easily. That’s what drives you. The love you have for that thing. You’re so focussed on it that you don’t even feel the challenges. That me with the drums.

When the pandemic hit i didn’t have that. I had to create space for me, I started making music and using my voice as a weapon to spread a message, a rhythm that would unite people.

I want my music and all I do to unite people. To see that we really are the human race and that each of us has unique gifts to share with the world.

My music is the message of my heart and my personal experiences. From growing up in a small town in Nigeria to the lessons I’ve learnt travelling the world, meeting people from all walks of life.

Music is a blessing. I’m most proud of being able to make people happy with the power of the drum. Whether it’s facilitating a drum circle or playing on stage to thousands, helping people find their rhythm, dancing, feeling the beat!

I’m excited to continue to spend time sharing the message of my heart through music and pushing the boundaries of how music and drums can be shared! Think drums for everyone, always at live shows, yoga classes, on retreats and in the magic of your backyard with your people!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anywhere there’s water and a running trail. I love kayaking and running so they’d follow my lead! We’d eat traditional Nigeria stew, made at my home! That’s the African way. We’d see some live music, where ever my friends are playing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Michael Franti for choosing me as the drummer for Spearhead for the last 23 years and counting. It’s been a ride.

Friends & family whose list is too long to write that have inspired me, encouraged me and lifted me up! You know who you are.
