We had the good fortune of connecting with Catalina Maldonado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catalina, is there something you believe many others might not?
A lot of business advice historically comes from men and a lot of the advice is surrounded around hustling hard to create profitable businesses, working around the clock, putting in the hours, you gotta want it more than you competitors.

I took this advice for years and hustled so hard my first year of businesses that I wanted to quit. I made $10,000 my first year in business and was exhausted.

Traditional “hard work” is not what created a successful business. People are working hard every single day and not creating the financial results they want in their business.

What transformed my business is becoming ultra aware of the dialogue happening in my mind, every single day. The minute I started recognizing my negative thinking and practiced intentional thinking — my business transformed. You mindset, the way you talk to yourself is the number one biggest contributor to your success as a business owner. You entire job as an entrepreneur is to be a decision maker and find solutions daily. And I have found that learning to speak to yourself kinder, constantly look for evidence of how things ARE working and growing in your business — this actually make YOU the type of person who can create any results for yourself. This type of thinking and hard inner work transformed by business to multiple six-figures my second year in business.

What should our readers know about your business?
Two short years ago, I was working myself to the bone doing all the things I was “supposed to do. in a coaching business”

I was putting out all the content, selling one hour coaching sessions, putting on workshops, and still only bringing in a couple grand every couple months. I quit my six-figure tech job and gave my business everything I had — while raising my one year old son.

I was tired, overworked, and didn’t know how I was going to create the impact I wanted to make in my community AND make enough money to sustain my business expenses.

I’m here to tell you that you DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE.

You can make all the money AND elevate your community. You can build a business and spend quality time with your familia. You don’t have to choose.

After working myself to the bone and almost quitting my business, I decided to stop listening to all the gurus and trust myself at a new level. I invested in my dream coach, I shifted my mindset, I doubled down on what was working and let go of everything that wasn’t.

I simplified everything inn my business and learned to take off my CEO hat — I was laser focused on creating client results and selling out of my program. I mastered my mindset and learned how to stop living in scarcity.

That year, I created $214 thousand dollars cash.

My combined client totals racked up to even more.

Now, my life’s work is helping women of color coaches and educators master their mindset, simplify their business so that they can focus on creating impact and creating revenue.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Los Angeles but I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay area. If I were to take my friends around the Bay Area, we would start our day hiking Tildon Park in Berekley, Ca. The views are incredible! Then we would relax at Claremont Hotel and prep for a ferry ride to San Francisco market and eat all the yummy clam chowder and oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company. Then we would take the ferry back to Oakland, get some ice cream and Fenton’s, walk arounnd Piedmont Ave until we’re ready for dinner, drinks, and fun at Osté in Old Oakland.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had incredible mentors my entire life. My mom, Martha Oralia Porras-Nava, being the main driver of all my successes but all the bad ass women I have gotten to work with in my career helped me build belief in myself as I was growing. I would love to thank my mentors Antoinette Scrosoppi, Shannon Blunden Nicols, Wes Everson, Dielle Charon, Stacey Boehman, and my peers and colleagues that inspire me daily, Erika Cruz, Jannese Torres-Rodriguez, and Mariela De La Mora.
