We had the good fortune of connecting with Cate Werynski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cate, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
There are quiet a few things I feel that people don’t realize about my industry! I think one of the bigger things that people don’t usually realize is that my job is not a normal 9-5, Monday through Friday. I have weeks go by with plenty of down time and days I’m running around all over Colorado doing 3 weddings and a photoshoot. Lately, I have had a lot weddings so early I’m getting on the road at 1am to get there in time for their sunrise elopement! As much as I love not being behind a desk and having a different schedule every week, I am in no control over it! Bride’s need to be done at a certain time and I have to schedule their services then. I am excited that because of COVID, a lot more people are deciding to do smaller weddings or just elope! For me, that means I have weddings every day of the week now so my schedule is much more diverse the the typical Friday, Saturday, and Sunday weddings.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I definitely accidentally ended up in hair and makeup, but I would not change it for the world! When I was in high school I loved anything artistic and really wanted to pursue a career in Opera singing. My mom’s best friend went to hair school back in the 80s and suggested I might go myself as it’s a nice side job while I was in college. I briefly looked into it and realized in New York it only takes 7 months to get your license. I signed up that day. As soon as school started, I knew I was in the right place and never sang professionally again (and I don’t miss it one bit!). I worked as a salon receptionist while I was in school and when I graduated I became a broom sweep and assistant for a lead stylist at the salon. After about a year, I moved up to become a stylist and realized very, very quickly that it was not for me. Coloring and cutting stressed me out! I decided to go back to school and figure out a different career. While I did that I worked at a local blow dry salon where I had the opportunity to work as the lead hair and makeup artist for Fisher Price. From there, the rest was history. I realized I could just do all the fun stuff as a job, so I quit college and began building my styling and makeup career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Actually, I moved here just a few months before COVID hit so I really haven’t been able to do that much exploring! Have any recommendations for me? 😉

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person to come to mind would be Kim Jundt of Kim J Beauty! Kim has been a mentor of mine here in Colorado. When I first moved here from Nashville, I didn’t know anyone in town. Kim found me on instagram and we have connected ever since. We have worked on so many weddings and photoshoots together and are so excited every time we get a chance to link up. She has helped me in so many ways when it comes to the business world and has definitely been a great source of knowledge. Her years of experience in this industry have helped me navigated my earlier years and really build a brand for myself. I am so grateful for our connection.
