We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Lennon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in from Sioux City Iowa until I was 19 years old before moving to California where I lived in Marina Del Rey California for the next 20 years. I moved to Colorado almost 35 years ago where I started my cabinetry business charliescarpentry.com. I entered the soapbox derby when I was 11 years old and competed for 3 years improving my derby car each year and ended up winning second place my final year. I’m from a family of 12, 10 boys and 2 sisters. All 10 of us boys competed in the annual soapbox derby and 7 of my brothers won the city championship and went on to Akron Ohio to compete in the national championship. This is how I learned about working with wood, tools and power equipment. I have used my knowledge and skills from those early years to this day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From junior high through high school I took mechanical drafting, machine drafting and architectural drafting my last year of high school. I took architectural drafting in college as well as photography, production art classes and silk screening. All of these classes I took in school I still use a lot of what I learned in my designing of cabinetry. I design pretty much everything I build and that’s a skill that I’ve learned from my schooling and experience doing paste up art work working in an art departments for advertising companies. I learned a lot from my older brother who was an artist and owner of his very successful advertising company.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve played drums in many local bands in Southern California, Colorado and the Midwest so music is very important part of my entertainment life. I would like to take someone to Red rocks either for a concert or at least to check out the amphitheater and music museum at Red rocks. There are some great museums in Denver especially The natural museum of natural art at city park. It’s always nice to take a day trip up to Estes park for the day. There are beautiful views and great restaurants and shops in Estes park. I’m a Denver Broncos season ticket holder so going to a football game or baseball game at Coors field is always a great experience. I like to experience great restaurants and Eddie V’s is one of my favorites.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my family for the encouragement and support they gave me to further my skills and experience to start my own business. I’d also like to give a shoutout to my German friend and mentor Horst Forester who taught me a lot of things about Architectural millwork and wood working.
