We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea McIntosh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
While it is overwhelming being both a business owner and a full-time event coordinator, I’ve learned to let go of things that are out of my control and only spend time and energy on things that are in my control. I think that this has helped me achieve a better work life balance because I’m not stressing over the little things anymore and instead, I spend my spare time doing activities that I enjoy. I have also learned how to enjoy the process, so it rarely feels like I’m “working,” but instead I’m reminding myself that my work is rewarding and it makes everything so much more enjoyable.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve known since I was a child that I wanted to be a singer/songwriter. In fact, I just moved to Los Angeles about six months ago so that I can get serious about my art and really have things take off. Although I quit making music during college, I’ve gotten back into it the past two years and have already released eight songs! I’m experiencing a whole new learning curve, such as mixing and mastering tracks, DAW software, recording equipment, and all of the logistics that come along with releasing music, and it has been so fun! Another piece of my career is that I host music retreats, which are perfect for artists that were in my situation and just don’t know where to start. At these retreats, I gather around 20-30 artists and we all stay at an Airbnb for a week. We make music, connect with each other, learn from one another, record the music we make, and perform our music at the showcase event on the final night! I’ve learned that you can’t be so worried about being perfect, you just need to start and get your music out there for the world to hear.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I am new to LA, I haven’t found all of the hidden gems yet, but when my family comes to town, the first stop we make is at Santa Monica. Not only can we enjoy the beach, but also the pier has so many activities and things to do. I’m also a coffee fanatic, so I know all the best coffee shops, like Compelling Coffee, Amp Coffee LA, Dialog Cafe, etc. Porto’s is one of the best bakeries you need to try if you’re in LA, and I’d highly recommend the chocolate croissant. There’s no shortage of rooftop bars either, and one of my favorites to grab a drink at is Mama Shelter. If you’re into hiking, there’s also plenty of trails to hike just outside of the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my mom for always being there to support and encourage me. Ever since I was a child, she never told me my dreams were unrealistic or unachievable; she always lifted my spirits and helped me overcome my setbacks. As an entrepreneur herself, she has always been someone I’ve looked up to and she taught me that not everyone is made for the typical 9-5 job. It is so fun being entrepreneurs together as adults because we share so many of the same goals and dreams and we can’t wait for them to come into fruition!
