We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Mills (Milly) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started deejaying about 14/15 years ago, it really happened from curiosity. I was at a friend at the time’s house his equipment was laying around and I asked “how does this work” and he had one response, “I will be willing to show you but you have to have your own music!” Now the rest is history. Now that there is some context of how I started to DJ, here lies the answer in starting the business “The Music Mill.” Another friend of mine who is a realtor was having a summer party which was more of a customer appreciation party and she needed my services but she said the only way she would use me was if I went ahead and registered as a business, she gave me a week’s deadline, I needed to come up with a name and go to the Colorado state website and get a business registered. Before this deejaying was a hobby, I wanted spread my Jamaican roots through the music and I wanted to be a part of the “Jamaican” party scene in Denver. That being said, I found out a year or so later after registering the name and doing that customer appreciation party that my friend wanted me to go down the path of owning a business behind deejaying because of how talented she saw I was and my charisma and she knew more things were on the horizon for me. Ever since I have been running with it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Immigrating from Jamaica to Westminster Colorado as a teenager was not easy. Westminster Colorado is not the first stop for many immigrating from the Caribbean so there was a lot of uncertainty, the thought of having to start over with making new friends and planting roots in an unfamiliar place. Overtime it was nothing, I stood on the principles I was raised with by my parents and grandparents which allowed me to be where I am today. I’m very proud that those same principles and foundation I was raised with allowed me to be a man of my word and deliver what I say I am going to deliver when doing business. Can you imagine someone hires you to do their wedding and what you said you would have done was not even close to being done? That would ruin that couple’s special day, that is a lifetime of a memory that one would not want to have. The saying goes, nothing worthwhile in life comes easy, there were ups and downs, mistakes that were made but you learn from them and continue trodding along. A lot of self improvement and intention were made after those ups and downs, had to have a mindset shift and look at the glass half full rather than half empty if I may say. One major lesson learned is, being your most authentic self will always win and keep you winning no need to be something that you are not.
I would love for the world to know that if you are at a DJ Chris Milly event or an event that Chris Milly is a part of you are destined to have a great time and if you book DJ Chris Milly of The Music Mill for your event, people will always remember the experience they’ve had.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Colorado summers, if they were here for a week in the summer, I would take them to a Rockies game, there is nothing like good ol baseball in the summer at Coors Field. I would take them for drinks at The Clayton Hotel and Members Club in Cherry Creek. Go for a drive into the mountains, Vail, Silverthorn, Aspen, Lookout Mountain. Sunday Funday at the View House. Hopefully the boys from GNC are doing a Munchies and Mimosas, if not then RnBrunch. I am big on Jamaican food, Reggae Pot in Centennial would definitely be a spot as well to get some curried goat, oxtail or jerk chicken.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It all started out of curiosity and someone was able to help me figure that curiosity out, we may not be close anymore but I have to give credit to DJ Bushy Bush. I also have to give credit to my PIC or PIL (partner in love) DJ MnM for always encouraging me and spotlighting my strong points when I may be in a weak or doubtful moment. Last but not least my close friends and family and all the people who have been on this journey along the way, the ones who may have doubted me as well.
