We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance has changed through the years. When I started my business, my son was just a few months old and I was just beginning to build my portfolio. I would work evening and weekends to photograph sessions and I would edit and complete other business needs while he napped. As he got older and we added another child into our family, my focus turned more towards a balance between family time and work time. I didn’t want either my family or business to suffer but I also wanted to make sure I was present with my family and not working every weekend. My business hours have changed, and will continue to as our family’s needs change. When I am outside of my business hours I strive to unplug so I can focus on my family and myself. When I am working, I focus on keeping distractions out so I can be as productive for my clients as I can. Running your own business can definitely be challenging, but setting boundaries to be successful both in personal and professional life, as well as taking care of yourself has become a top priority.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love documenting children as they grow, especially in that first year! They change so fast and this time is so fleeting, photographing them let’s you hold onto those moments just a bit longer! I think what sets me apart is not just my photos, but the continued relationship beyond just their session is where my heart is. I love connecting with my clients over parenting, their birth journey and everything in between. I continue that journey in a moms group that supports, uplifts and is a place just to laugh with other moms.

My journey has had it’s ups and downs. As with anything you learn by making mistakes, practicing and picking yourself up and moving forward when you feel like you’ve fallen. If you let a challenge stop you, you’ll never get to where you want to be. I struggled often with barriers and doubt and sometimes it takes just taking small steps forward to get through that challenge. I’ve learned to trust and believe in myself above all. You are the only person standing in your way for success.

In addition to creating beautiful images documenting a growing family, I strive to make sure my clients have FUN at their session. I’m a bit silly, chatty and often embarrass myself making crazy noises, telling ‘mom jokes’ or sometimes simply letting a kiddo help me take photos to make them feel at ease during the session. You can expect a lot of playing, easy conversation and a lot of laughter when you work with me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh there are so many! I love a good day in the mountains. One of my favorite places is Steamboat Springs, CO. We’d spend some time at Strawberry hot springs, enjoy lunch at Salt and Lime, hike one or a few of the many trails in the area. Spend a day at Pearl Lake paddle boarding and stay the night in one of the yurts. The town itself is so welcoming, relax and always something new to explore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My local photography group has been a huge support in everything from helping with arising business questions, to supporting achievements. From this group, one person has been nothing short of amazing. Sarah Goff with Sarah Goff Photography took a chance on me over 4 years ago to be her second photographer during weddings. Since then we continue to work weddings together, but she has been one of my biggest cheerleaders in my professional career and has also become a wonderful friend. Another huge thanks to my husband for supporting my dreams and doing everything on his part to make them come true. I wouldn’t be here without them!
