We had the good fortune of connecting with Clarence Devon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clarence, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’d say one of the main reasons I started doing photography and film more is because my main job doesn’t involve a “creative” side to it. While I may have to come up with different ways to get the task at hand done, it’s not the same as capturing an image or scene and showing it to others as I saw it. Hearing people say, “I would’ve never looked at this object or scene this way” or “I would’ve never thought to capture this moment this way” is sort of satisfying as it helps others see things differently.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My film photography is what I believe sets me from others in my opinion. Whenever I take film pictures, you won’t see me making sure my lens is super clean or making sure everything is perfect. I like to take it how it is right then and there and if my lens happens to have a spec of dust or if something unplanned happens, I try to capture that. For me film/analog pictures are have more “feeling” to them, so I try to keep it as close to that human feeling as possible. So rarely am I adding filters or removing imperfections from those photos when processing them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m pretty new to Colorado so still exploring for myself at the moment and getting used to everything. With that being said, I would take them to all my favorite bars which all happen to be dive bars; not big on “fancy” bars. So maybe Don’s Club Tavern in the Capital Hill area or to some of the bars in Five Points/Rino. For food, I’d take them to either Bamboo, Uchi, or Uncles Ramen, those places have been my go-to spots. I guess I should add bb.q Chicken to the list as well, recent place I tried out that was amazing. For tourist things, I would have to opt for Cheesman Park and then head over to Denver Botanical Gardens. As I mentioned before, still pretty new to town but these are places I would go to over and over.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to a friend named Sav. In addition to me wanting to feed my creative side, they also helped push me to dive into photography, especially film. In the past, I would only take pictures while vacationing or just here and there, they reached out and talked to me and was just like “You should do this more” which meant a lot since they are a full-time photographer. So after talking back and forth here and there, they gave me some pointers on what to do and what not to do, and here I am just going “full send” with this hobby.
