We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Devine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, how do you think about risk?
This is actually one of my favorite questions. My whole life after high school played out based on taking risks. Before I started doing professional wrestling I was extremely introverted and I would go out of my way not to be noticed or heard. I had all these really cool dreams and ideas but always thought I would never pursue them because I did not want to stand out. When I spoke to my high school counselor, ( shout out to Mr.Burdick) I realized I should pursue my dreams. I will never forget him asking me what I would do if I could do anything in the world and me telling him I would be a professional wrestler. He said so forwardly, well just go do it. Next thing I know I am walking into a sketchy warehouse in commerce city to start training. Through taking risks and having various amazing mentors in my life, I was able to go on to do all these amazing things like be an actor in a movie filmed in Spain, wrestle in the Pepsi Center for the WWE, travel the country, and endeavor in starting my own business as a Realtor here in Colorado. All this started with me coming out of my bubble as a shy 18-year-old and turning into everything I wanted to be as an adult.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My real estate career started in December of 2020. I spent most of my work life doing bartending or property management. Just before Covid, I decided I could not do it any longer. I wanted to make something of myself. I knew I loved helping people and real estate checked a lot of the boxes off for me. I love working with people and organizing big projects that matter. I love working under pressure and helping people achieve their goals. I also get to meet a lot of people with wrestling so I knew I would have the sphere to get me where I wanted to go. A big lesson I came across recently from a book is the idea of inspiring VS. persuasion. It’s this idea that we should be authentic and work with people who we share ideas with. The thought process is that clients should never be “lured in” by sales tactics and scripts but rather excited and eager to work with you because of your ability to do the job well and connect with people. This spoke to me deeply because one of my biggest fears getting into real estate was becoming “salesy”, fake, or aggressive. My biggest obstacle has probably been adjusting to the market while also learning the job. While a lot of duties as a Realtor are standard there are different methods you have to learn based on how the market is at that time. Learning a job while also having to pivot and change how you do. things is tough. The learning curve adds a fun challenge to this career. The things that set me apart are my team and my drive. I know a house will probably be the most expensive purchase a person makes in their life and I don’t take my job for granted. I heard an awesome quote that once said the difference between someone whos good and someone whos extraordinary is about an hour of extra work. I find this to be true a lot in my career. Whether it means double checking contracts and paperwork are all caught up or spamming the different phone numbers I need to call in order to keep a transaction intact, it is always amazing what one more hour of work can do. In terms of my brand, I am Colorado’s one and only real estate agent/professional wrestler. I think its fun to mix the bad guy I play in the ring juxtaposed to the hard working and gentle person I am in real life. Real estate by day, pro wrestler by night!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is an awesome question. There is so much to do here in Colorado! My favorite restaurant here is India Nepal Oven in Littleton. It was my first job when I was 17 years old. Not only is it my absolute favorite Indian restaurant but it is also my favorite food in the whole world. The night life in Denver is also a lot of fun. There is a speak easy in Cherry creek called B&GC. It is a super hard to find, Great Gatsby themed speak easy tucked away in an alley way. Such a cool concept and great cocktails. For when I really feel like going out, my favorite club/bar downtown is called Milk. it is a multi-level club in Denver with a different theme in every room and an arcade with a really cool upstairs balcony. My favorite brewery in the state is Ratio beerworks. It has a cool punk rock theme along with some awesome comedy nights and other events. I swear I do not just know all the cool bars though! I love going to the musuem of Nature and Science here as well.
They have recently updated the space exhibit and it is so interactive and fun. I also love the mountain towns here in Colorado. They are a blast to spend a weekend or day at. My favorite towns include Estes Park, George town, Grand Junction, Grand Lake and Glenwood Springs. Glenwood is a blast and also includes my favorite hike, Hanging Lake. Just an hour outside of Glenwood Springs is my favorite campground, Deer Hammer Campground. It is right off the river, super quiet, with an amazing view of the mountains. I absoulutely love it there. Lastly, I would take them to my two favorite wrestling shows I do in this state. New Era Wrestling and Lucha Libre and Laughs. Lucha Libre and Laughs has some awesome MC’s and comedians that go on in between each wrestling match. it is a party from start to finish. You can catch both of those shows coming up August 12th and 13th starring yours trully!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is so many people I have been lucky to have in my life. First I have to thank my father for raising me as a single parent for the majority of my childhood and never giving up on me. I have to thank my (step) mom who we met in my teen years who has always been my shoulder to cry on. My grandpa for always saw something bigger in me than I ever saw and always helps me keep my head on straight. Mr.Burdick, my high school counselor who saved me when I was a lost 17-year-old kid, Lonnie Valdez who started as my wrestling trainer and quickly become another important father figure in my life, and Dan Gomer who started out as my mentor in real estate and has become a close friend, life coach, and all-around inspirational. And my late childhood best friend Aaron Thane. I dedicate all my successes and inspiration in life to him and the memories I have with him.
