We had the good fortune of connecting with Coleen Orr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Coleen, how do you think about risk?
When I look back… Taking risks has played a big piece in the pie of my life and career. I didn’t analyze decisions to the point of extinction. Instead, I said yes to the things that I was passionate about, and tried my best. I truly believe that when things are meant to be – they will be!
When setting out to start my second career, I felt blessed to locate the vintage hat manufacturing equipment on a 2300 mile road trip from Alberta to Corpus Christi, Texas. I had no clue how to use this equipment, but was excited for the opportunity to try.
I am now, over 25 years into my custom hat making business and continue to love the many aspects that it involves. There is a wide variety of styles and designs that I have fun matching to character and head shapes.
I still step out of my comfort zone with many projects. From plumbing and woodworking, to sewing and metalworks. Some are more successful than others, but there is always something to learn.
The one thing I know for sure is that work is not the enemy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hat making is very much a manufacturing process. The specialty lies in individualizing each hat to match the client. It can be quite a personal experience, as we work together in choosing a creation that is an extension of your character, and features. Quality also plays a big role in hats. A higher quality ( beaver fur) will serve you for many years. It is richer looking, lighter weight and more resistant to weather and everyday wear.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Red Rocks park and amphitheater is always on our Denver highlights list. From early morning exercise to photo shoots and concerts. Our most favorite event is the Easter sunrise service.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am a follower of Jesus. I believe there is a perfect plan for my life. This belief allows me a freedom to step out of my comfort zone. I trust in a plan that will bring joy and peace personally along with serving and contributing to my community and world.
