We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk, is well.. risky. But if we don’t take it how will we succeed? I have definitely taken some risks that did not turn out all that well. One example I would say was jumping head first into my business was a risk that didn’t turn out how I planned. The outcome at first was not what I was hoping for. I thought I had done all of the research I needed to start it up. However, after trial and error, I have learned so much. Is my business where I want it to be? No, but am I learning along the away? Absolutely. And that to me is rewarding. I also play semi-professional women’s tackle football for the Utah Falconz. s. Joining this sport was a risk. I was out of shape. I had never played football in my life. I barely knew the rules. It takes a lot of time, especially during the season. I am now on my 5th season with the team and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The friends and people I have met along this journey have taught me so much. They helped me through one of the most difficult years of my life so far. I don’t know where I would be without this organization. Again, the risk came with an amazing reward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I do work a full time “9-5” type of job. I work as a workflow overseeing a team of 15 agents. I am there to help the succeed in their current role and hopefully in life. I manage with a life happens mentality and it does. I also know a business needs to run. An example would be is helping a single mom on my team figure out to manage running to pick up a sick kid from school but still being able to work her full shift because she needs a full paycheck and we need her to help our clients. When a manager/workflow cares about their employees their employees care about what they do, in my opinion. I am also a bonus mom to 3 beautiful kids who help remind me how to stay young and have fun, not to get so wrapped in busyness of life. I own a business, Royal Custom Creations LLC. Through this business I take custom orders from adding logos onto tumblers or clothing to making magnets for theatres cast gifts to making beautiful home decor out of resin. My husband will eventually join in by adding his hand carved wood pieces that are absolutely stunning! I am so excited for that addition coming this year. On top of all that I am football player. I joined the team to save me from myself and have continued to do it every year for the little girl coming up behind me with big dreams of the impossible, to show her the impossible is truly possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am from a smallish town in Utah. If I had a friend coming to town for the week I would take them to Lagoon, tell them you can get the best coco-cola there. We would go to a concert at the America First Credit Union Amphitheater, if there was concert going on during that time. If it is too cold for an outdoor concert I would take them to a Utah Jazz game and yell until we have no voices. For dinner we would check out R&R BBQ, seriously sooo good! And we would check out the Melting Pot in Downtown Salt Lake City, a little pricey but a really fun experience! Park City has is a bit of a drive from me but worth taking a day and going to the Utah Adventure Park. They have things for year round! Zip Lining, Aqua Park in the Summer or in the Winter backcountry tubing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my parents for being my silent partners in everything I do. My husband for putting up with sleepless nights, quick turn around business trips that are exhausting and holding my hand through not only the highs but the lowest of lows. My wonderful step kids for their patience while bonus mom is working on her side business or leaving dad to figure out dinner on football practice nights. I need to shoutout the Utah Falconz (Women’s Excellence 4 Life) Organization for welcoming onto the team and helping me through the hardest year of my life, so far.
