We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Weber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Leaving the conventional healthcare system to start a private practice definitely felt risky initially! My co-founder and I worked as occupational therapists in outpatient and hospital settings for a few years before venturing out on our own. There was a small sense of security that we were in it together, but it was still scary. However, we knew that in order to achieve our potential and to truly practice at the top of our license, we needed to be outside the traditional healthcare system without all the restrictions of big business and insurance. We knew this small risk would provide us with the most freedom, flexibility and joy in treating pelvic floor dysfunction in women & children.

We also know that our clients take a risk in working with us! Pelvic floor therapy requires a level of vulnerability and commitment that not everyone is ready for. In order to achieve the goals our clients have, they need to do the work outside of our therapy sessions. That looks different for everyone, but- just like with our business- the benefits far outweigh the risk.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
OWN Your Pelvic Health offers pelvic floor therapy for women and children. We see clients in-home, virtually, and at Belly Bliss in Denver. On the women’s health side of things, we specialize in pregnancy & postpartum. This means that common conditions we treat include diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, pain with sex, c-section recovery, back/hip/pelvic pain, constipation, and leaking urine, gas or stool. We also work proactively to help people have a pain-free pregnancy, smooth birth, and fast postpartum recovery. On the pediatric side of things, we work with toddlers and children who experience bed-wetting, constipation, difficulty with potty-training, withholding, and anything else that impacts bathroom habits.

What sets us apart is that we treat our client as the expert. People often consult healthcare professionals because they expect US to be the expert. And while it’s true that Annie and I are experts in pelvic health, our clients are the experts on themselves. So many of our clients see 5+ professionals before they come to us. Often, they don’t get better because other healthcare professionals don’t have the time to listen. They don’t get to the root of the problem. We have longer sessions so we can truly understand ALL the pieces that impact our clients’ health. There is never one right answer. Our holistic approach and individualized sessions get our clients better, faster.

We chose this business model because we’ve seen how traditional healthcare has failed us and our clients over and over again. Your typical outpatient pelvic floor therapy clinic will see clients for 30-45 minutes, with high productivity standards for therapists and pressure from insurance companies about how to treat and what to bill. This impacts how therapists practice. Having worked in this model, we know that it limits the quality of a therapist’s care.

We want people to know that you don’t HAVE to seek care in-network with your insurance. You don’t have to seek care from the outpatient clinic connected to your hospital with a 6 week waitlist and 30 minute sessions. You can get better, faster, and for less money by working with a small practice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Favorite places to eat: El Five
Somebody People
Snarf’s
Edgewater at Sloan’s Lake
Uchi & Sushi Den (for sushi lovers if you want to splurge!)

Favorite hikes:
They’re all a bit of a drive, but beautiful no matter what time of year!
Lake Isabelle (also great to snowshoe in the winter)
Mt. Elbert
Mayflower Gulch (especially in late July to see wildflowers)

I rarely miss a West Highlands Farmer’s Market on Sundays, and I always love a walk around Standley Lake, Sloan’s Lake or Wash Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Annie Close is my business partner and the other pelvic floor therapist at OWN Your Pelvic Health. We have been in it together since day 1, and I truly don’t think I could do this without her! Running a business as a healthcare professional is daunting, but she makes it fun & incredibly enjoyable. We also certainly wouldn’t be where we are without our life partners, Connor & Ryan. They listen to our business plans and case studies about the pelvic floor with unwavering support.
