Meet Crow Cavalier | Punk musicians/String Slingers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Crow Cavalier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Crow, what inspires you?
We have a pretty large band (six members!) so it’s tough to nail down a singular inspiration- but I think we all find ourselves inspired by our DIY music fellows. There’s so much love and cooperation that goes in to making DIY shows and underground venues work. It isn’t exactly glamorous; everything runs on “punk time”. Sometimes you’re scrambling for equipment, figuring out details that got lost in the midst of everything else- but without fail, you can always see that these shows are a labor of love for everyone involved. More invidually- our loved ones, the greats of our respective instruments, and of course, each other.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets us apart is the size and diversity of our band. It’s a little chaotic, messy, and weird, but it’s what makes us unique! We’ve been spoiled a bit by DIY music, where deviating from the classic set up of four dudes and their guitars, bass, and drum, is relatively normal; but every time we step out of that bubble in to larger venues I realize more and more that it isn’t necessarily as normal as it feels to me. Misogyny, racism, and homophobia are still very much alive and well in the world of music. So every show is a lesson in taking up the space we’re entitled to, and being confident and assertive enough to take it and say “I belong here as much as you do!”
Writing can be tricky with the range of instrumentation we have; the line between being dynamic and absolute musical chaos becomes very thin with two guitars, drums, bass, cello, violin, and a handful of other instruments that sometimes make their way into a new song. We’d like to think we tread that line with style, but that’s really up to our listeners, haha.
And like so many other small bands and business, staying a float during the pandemic was hard- how do you write, record, and do the things that help us break even with our personal investments into the band, while being stuck inside and away from each other? We got through it, thankfully, but coming out of lockdown was a bit like starting back at square one.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
7th Circle, without a doubt! I don’t think you can experience Denver without a trip into the music scene. The tattoo and piercing culture out here also has a rich history, so if you’re thinking about customizing your character, come out to Denver for it! And for drinks, the bartenders at Lost Lake are some of the sweetest human beings I’ve ever met.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Alex Ertel and Brekon Baxter- for their incredible photography skills, and Robin Ertel- for facilitating practice in spite of how obnoxious we are. All three, for their unwavering love and support.
Arty Groobert- For being a day one fan, stellar interviewer, merch model, and friend.
