We had the good fortune of connecting with Curtis Bodiker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Curtis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was really young, I have always had a deep love for music and theatre. As I got older and began to learn how to sing, act, and play guitar, I discovered that being an artist not only brought me a lot of joy, but I also had the opportunity to share that joy with others. It is the reason why I became an artist and why I continue to create through my music. To give people an outlet to feel their emotions fully and truthfully.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had been going to renaissance fairs since I was a very small kid, and a lot when I was in high school. I had also grown up watching a lot of pirate movies, so for me I always knew that if I were to work at a festival that I would want to be some kind of pirate themed musician.

The thing that actually inspired me to audition though was a set of tarot cards. I was on the phone with my brother, thinking about auditioning and decided to pull a card from the deck to help me decide. The card I drew was The Wheel of Fortune, and after that the rest his history. I auditioned, met amazing people who helped guide and teach me the ways of the street musician, and practiced for many hours to get ready for that first opening weekend. I am very lucky and extremely grateful that the pirate musician idea I had all the way back in high school happened to be one people connected with.

I suppose the moral in all this is trust your intuition and believe in your ideas. Even if it doesn’t pan out, the experience you get and the people you meet along the way can open doors you never thought possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Obviously the Colorado Renaissance Festival! Since that is only a seasonal event though, some other places that are great are the Meow Wolf Exhibit off I-25, Sam’s No. 3 downtown for some delicious breakfast food, Washington Park if they are looking for a relaxing afternoon, and Pearl Street up in Boulder for the people and shopping. Oh, and all the antique stores on Broadway, those are a must see for trinket collectors like myself.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to all my friends at the Colorado and Santa Fe Renaissance Festivals. It is their encouragement, love, and support that has allowed me to find myself as a person and as an artist. No matter where I am or what I am doing, a piece of every single one of them inspires me to be the best version of myself I can be.
