We had the good fortune of connecting with Daisy Villa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daisy, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
The definition of success is very subjective but I’m sure that whenever one thinks about success some of the first things that come to mind are money or the possessions that you have. However to me success is having freedom. Having the freedom to do with your time as you please, being able to fully enjoy life and not just existing in a life that requires the same daily routine. There’s sacrifices that have to be made in order to get to where you want to get in life no matter how you view success and achieving your maximum potential in life. In order for me to achieve success or as I view it “freedom” it is necessary to have inner peace, good mental health, relationships that I value, being a good example for others, making an impact and a difference while truly being happy and fulfilled with my life. Success is doing what you love with the people you love no matter how small society makes you think your accomplishments are.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since I was a child I’ve always been in love with the idea of pursuing a career in remodeling and flipping homes. Up until now my husband and I have bought and sold two houses. I would have to say that what sets me apart from others in the same field is the fact that I have a lot of passion for what I am doing. Sure the return on an investment in real estate is good but that is not why I pursue it. Growing up my dad worked remodeling homes so I was always got to see first hand how you can give new life to a home that to some might be outdated and not appealing. Something as simple and easy as a new coat of paint on the walls or changing some light fixtures can really transform a room and make you feel like you’re in a completely different space. Designing spaces is one of my biggest passions, I’m always looking forward to any project that involves updating a space.
My ultimate goal would be to hopefully be able to turn it into a family business one day.
Real estate is a challenging business that requires a lot of knowledge, organization, budgeting, and understanding. You have to be educated on the market, the property location, types of permits you have to pull, you have to understand the risks of your decisions, among other things. For example something as simple as deciding how much to spend on a certain type of tile to place on a floor can really play into the profit you will be making bc there’s labor costs to consider, and material pricing.
My husband and I really had to work hard in order to be able to save enough money to buy our first flip house and to be able to also fix it up so that we could sell it. I have come to learn that anything you want you can accomplish no matter how challenging it is or how unattainable it might seem. When you really want it you’ll work as hard as it takes until you make your dreams come true. Once you complete your goal you won’t even care how hard you worked in order to get there or all the struggles you encountered along the way.
Something that I want people to know about my story is that the opportunity to do what I am doing wasn’t just accomplished by myself. I owe a lot of it to my husband who knew how much I wanted to make this a reality and he helped me achieve this goal. Having a supportive partner can really change your life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado is a beautiful state with so much to do and see. If a friend was visiting for a week long trip we would most likely spend the majority of it visiting and exploring the mountains there’s so many amazing hiking trails, lakes, and sights to see. We could also head out to Colorado Springs and enjoy visiting the Cheyenne Mountain zoo or the Garden of the Gods.
My itinerary for the perfect day in Colorado would be going to walk around the red rocks amphitheater I think it is beautiful especially if you experience it at sunrise or sunset it’s truly magical. Next we would probably be going to visit lookout mountain you can really appreciate the views of the surrounding mountains and a clear view of downtown Denver. For lunch I would recommend going to the Stanley marketplace there’s so many great restaurants and food options to try and it’s family friendly. After having some lunch I would go get some ice cream at one of my favorite rolled ice cream shops called Milkit I recommend trying out the mango flavor it’s my favorite.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my life there have been many individuals that have encouraged me, inspired me, and motivated me in succeeding and achieving my life goals. It is difficult to just choose one or two but I guess I would definitely have to say one of those individuals is my mom she has always encouraged me in everything that I have tried to do, she always gives me her full support and love. I will forever be thankful to my mom for giving my siblings and I the opportunity to have a better life while leaving hers behind in Mexico. She did so much for us to succeed and have the opportunities that we have today so I always knew that I had to make her proud.
My husband deserves so much recognition as well. He has always supported me and pushed me to new heights both personally and professionally. We both grew up in a low income family so the desire to make something for ourselves has always been there. We have truly struggled to get to where we are today but I truly believe that those struggles make you appreciate what you have so much more because it wasn’t just handed to you it was something that you had to dedicate your time and energy towards making it happening.
The last person who truly made an impact in my life was Michelle Obama, back in 2009 when I was in high school I had the pleasure of having lunch with her at the Governor’s mansion here in Colorado for an all girls mentoring that she hosted. Everyone who attended the luncheon was placed at a table with a mentor and I was lucky enough to have been sat in table number one which was the table that Mrs. Obama was mentoring. Her advice that day definitely encouraged me towards pursuing my dreams and aspirations in life.
