We had the good fortune of connecting with Baylee Chapo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Baylee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to improve the way people used and viewed influencer marketing. I thought it needed to be more aligning, and less promotional. Does this brand even align with this influencer, or is it just to get some publicity off of the influencers social media pages? I began to rethink how pairings were made, and how products were talked about by influencers. How could I help brands utilize influencer marketing, while allowing creators to maintain total honesty?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I took my love for cannabis content a little further than most would. It started with just me creating content for several years, and turned into an entire influencer marketing company where I help creators with content full time. I love that it allows me to be creative in the space that I am most interested in. It wasn’t easy to get here, but after three years of this, I feel good about where this venture is headed. Whenever it got tough, because it definitely has, I learned the best thing to do was to pivot in a way that would pave a longer road ahead than the dead end I was facing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m currently between Austin, TX and San Diego, CA. I’ve only been exploring Austin for about 4 months, so I’m still a tourist myself. I grew up in San Diego, so I could offer someone a much better time there. If you visited me in San Diego, we would: -Go to my favorite beaches, like Stone Steps in Encinitas
-Hike! Most importantly, Torrey Pines. That’s where my parents got married, and I love to show people the exact tree they were married under. Plus, the views are incredible, and often times I see dolphins while on this coastline hike.
-Similar to hiking, I’d take you to the beach for a treasure hunt, also known as “Beach Combing.” You will sure find some treasure, like sea glass and sand dollars.
-I’d take you to eat at Lotus Cafe, Sushi Deli (a family tradition), and you’d have to try the Aztec from Lofty Coffee!
-We’d day trip to Palm Desert, and we’d go to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. This is one of my favorite places on planet earth. The animals here would otherwise not survive in the wild, and many plants are being grown to help increase the native plant population. There’s even…you guessed it…a few hikes off the backside! Plus, while we are there, I’d show you a few of my favorite dispensaries like Authentic 760 and The Vault.
-If it’s in season, we’re going strawberry picking in Carlsbad
-After a trip to a dispensary, I’d take you to my special lookout spot. It’s a secret, so I can’t tell you the exact location, but I promise it’s worth the sesh!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout was easy to pick. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my dad, Gene Chapo. I got my entrepreneurial bug from him. He taught me it was okay to change careers and take professional risks. He is always there for me when I am stuck and need to pivot with my business, and he always encourages me to try new things. If it wasn’t for my dad telling me I could do anything if I put my mind to it, I doubt I ever would have started a business in the cannabis space. Everyone thinks their dad is the best dad in the world, but there is no one like mine.
