We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalaine Bartelme and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dalaine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The catalyst for starting my business came when I wished that I had a small box that I could carry in my purse with coloring supplies in it so I could color when I had down time instead of looking at my phone. My husband and I started researching and couldn’t find anything like what I wanted, so we decided to create it ourselves! Luckily, my husband designs products for a living, so we were able to turn my dream into a product to share with the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been creative and loved drawing as a kid. When we started COLORpockit, I didn’t know any artists to ask to create the art for our product, so I decided to create it myself. The result is the Welcome Deck, which is the set of coloring postcards that comes with every COLORpockit. I designed this art to be appealing to colorists of all ages and abilities. Since then, I have created many other refill coloring decks and am in charge of recruiting new artists for our brand. One thing that is very important to me is making sure that our artists are fairly compensated for their artwork. Our artists get a commission on each refill deck of their art that we sell, and we promote our artists on social media. We have artists that draw their art by hand and digital artists as well. Our company currently has 19 artists that create for us, and we are always looking for new artists to join our team.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A fun trip to Fort Collins would definitely include a visit to Old Town Square downtown, There are fun concerts there in the summer, and an ice skating rink in the winter. The area is great for people watching, and it’s surrounded by great restaurants, art galleries and boutiques for shopping. A hike on the Cathy Fromme Prairie trail would also be a must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my husband, Mike Bartelme. If he hadn’t believed in my idea and didn’t offer his skills to create our design, my fantastic idea would have remained just that… an idea. We went through over 30 prototypes before we found the perfect design. Our collaboration incorporated all of the features I wanted and we supported each other through the two-year process. Since launching our online sales in the fall of 2018, we have worked together to grow our business and add to the product line.
