Meet Dan Moyers | Passionate fly angler and Founder & Owner of Catchflo

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Moyers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Like many entrepreneurs and startup businesses, starting Catchflo was born from me (personally) not being able to find any fly fishy casual footwear (worth wearing) in the market and so I started Catchflo to fill that gap. I believe that the best products meet an actual need, and often that need is identified by the founder themselves who experiences it firsthand and thus is uniquely suited to meeting it from their own unique and innovative perspective.

Additionally, I know that I like making things that bring happiness and fun to other people, and allowing fly anglers to express their passion of the water does just that in spades.

The process I undertook was to first do market research to validate the size of the market opportunity which validated that I could build a real business in this area. I then established a vision and mission for the brand and identified the first set of footwear styles and designs we’d launch with as well as manufacturers who would make and also fulfill our products. I then found my lead designer, established our technology platform to sell online (Shopify) and launched our brand.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional brand and mantra is I’m where thought meets action. I’m ultimately a “just go do and try and learn” person who strives to be more about actions than just words. In essence, don’t talk about it — be about it!

My career has spanned three (3) major areas and industries — sports marketing, technology and fly fishing. I’ve always worked for startup companies often joining in their very earliest stage and then being part of the team that helps to grow and scale often 10X during my times at various companies.

The first part of my career was focused on sports marketing, and then as the Internet “happened” in the late 90’s, I moved into technology which I’ve worked in for 20+ years and still do to this day. I added fly fishing to my professional journey with the creation of Catchflo and am excited to see that path continue as we grow the brand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d have them visit me at my Basecamp in Rigdway Colorado which is the gateway to San Juans in epic southwest Colorado. I spend 6+ weeks a year living / working / playing from my RV camper at Basecamp and so I’d have quite the itinerary of fly fishing, eats, hiking and ATV’ing lined up around Ridgeway, Telluride, and Ouray in the playground of playgrounds that is southwest Colorado.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
