We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Schrock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Originally I am from the suburbs of Chicago. When I was almost 18 I moved to the city to be free of the suburbs and closer to what I was looking for in life. I always had a draw to be near activity and art and Chicago was always calling me. Upon moving there I worked and saved up to attend college. After a couple years I was able to get into school and start that journey.

Growing up in the quiet of the suburbs, farm land really, gave me freedom to run around and not have to deal with much but mainly it taught me how much I enjoy solitude and being alone. Oddly enough being drawn to the city and living in the city I still had that feeling of enjoying my alone time. While in school and finding my niche in photography I was drawn to what I still do today as I could work alone and choose the hours I wanted to play in the studio. To this day I still love the fact that I can work on my own to produce what I enjoy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel my career borders between creativity and business. The path to getting through so many years of being a photographer and working with large clients and small clients with large budgets and small budgets took patience and failure. Sometimes I wonder if I have had as many failures as success. Without the failures there wouldn’t be the drive to press forward while learning from the mistakes. This may be the most important lesson I have learned along the way.

As I look back on my career I know it wasn’t easy but it wasn’t hard either. Some of those years were the best times of my life and I wouldn’t change them for anything. The struggle along the way is what makes it so worth while.

Along my path I developed a “style” of photography. My approach isn’t unique to me alone but I found what I truly love in product photography. I like to tell or show a story of some of the most common things to most of us. I like to find the beauty in the details that a great designer made a point of making beautiful that go overlooked. For example a detail on the sole of shoe or the inside of jacket, something that isn’t even seen when being used and may not even have any impact on function.

I don’t see myself as having a brand. I have a love for what I do and collaborating with others to get their story out there and show something in the best way possible is what I love about what I do with photography and advertising.

Today I am so exited to be on to another story or journey along with photography. We have opened a health and wellness space and we are bringing Red Light Therapy to people. My wife and I found this modality a few years ago and it changed our life and we decided to open our own shop to introduce people to this as well as deliver it to so many people that already know about it. This brings me so much happiness to help people feel better in the lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we moved from Chicago to Denver we realized we went from one city to another and only lasted a year downtown, we moved up to Evergreen and feel like we live in a vacation. In that year we did find great spots for everything and I do still love going to Izakya Den for dinner then possibly Boettcher Concert Hall for the Colorado Symphony or just a stroll through Clifford Still or Denver Art Museum. I will say one place I found recently that is great is ESP HiFi, check it out.

Of course too we have almost too many awesome brewery all around this state!

The place I would be taking, and do take, friends is up to Lake Dillon to go kayaking or out to any of the mountains for hiking and being outside. Our “go to” spot to stop after a day out would be Westbound & Down in Idaho Springs. Killer food and incredible beer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely had mentors in school along with friends that challenged each other and encouraged each other. I will say that I truly had mentors as I entered into the apprenticeship phase both while in school and after leaving. I owe so much thanks to these people and to this day, twenty-five years later, I am still close to them and we remain friends. I still go to these people with questions and advice too.

The books, the organizations, the groups are consistently changing and I take that in when new things come along and absorb as much as I can. It’s always evolving and growing.
