We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Tremblay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well…first of all, having my own business isn’t new for me! A long time ago, I was a car mechanic and I used to have my own garage. It was a small family business and I was working with my dad. What brought me into photography is a complete different thought…my father passed away before having the chance to take a single day of his retirement which is super sad. Since being a car mechanic wasn’t my passion anymore, I decided to sell the garage, went back to school to study photography and start living my dream on a daily basis since we never know when our time on this beautiful planet will end. Doing something I love and am passioned about on a daily basis doesn’t feel like working anymore!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I come from a very technical background as I used to be a car mechanic, it was important to me to not only combine my already extremely good sense of observation into my workflow but also adding my artistic touch. How? Let me explain: finding your own style takes years… I am truly a sucker for details! I love resolution! But photography isn’t all about capturing details right? Even though I am a landscape photographer, I mostly capture my images in the portrait format. A vertical composition makes the most sense to me in most situation since it simplifies the way my audience will read them. A narrower composition will always have less distractions and lesser important details on the left and right sides of the frame. When hunting for compositions, I love to use the abundance of details and make them even crispier and richer. I love to use strong leading lines cracks on a rock or simply a piece of dead tree to guide my viewers’ eyes where they should go into the composition. Beautiful weather to me means stormy and/or moody atmosphere! I am not a blue sky type of person! I love my viewers to feel the elements of a given scene just the way I was feeling them when I captured that said image! This doesn’t go without the technical side which consist of using techniques such as Exposure Bracketing, Focus Stacking, Perspective Blend, Time Blending. All of this helps me to retain a maximum amount of details and also gives me a full artistic freedom!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Canada doesn’t have a shortage of epic places…but my heart belongs to the Canadian Rockies! I love those majestic peaks! I love nature and I always try to stay away from cities as much as possible! Being in the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia truly is rejuvenating for my soul and inspiring for the artist I became.
There are a few hikes that are truly dear to me but if I had to choose a single one, it would have to be Chester Lake hike in the Kananaskis, Alberta. That place during winter season truly is a pure winter wonderland! Try to imagine a kid’s face entering a Toy’s R Us store? Well, that’ll be my face during the 7km of the hike! The snow covered pines trees, the beautiful pristine snowy meadows, the partially frozen streams and to top it all, Mount Chester which is one of the most beautiful mountain in the Canadian Rockies.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
