We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Within my business? Making others smile with the creations I make. Nothing is better than seeing a little child smile when presented with a cake or cookie they really love. Making something beautiful, unique, and tasty is my mission and I LOVE creating those things.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started off wanting to make Delicious things for friends and family. Once people started asking me to make something for them to purchase, my business was born. My creations were tasty, but not exactly unique or truly artistic at first. I’d like to think that I am pretty decent in arts and craft alike, so I set out to teach myself how to create more beautiful edible art. I started watching YouTube videos and reading tutorials on how to create buttercream flowers and swirls. I began making beautiful and tasty gourmet cupcakes. I branched out from there to make flower bouquets. My cookies are delicious and I decided I wanted to make those more unique as well. I started making huge gourmet cookies with crazy ingredients and decorations. These went over really well. I get to use my creative side with these all the time. I have an idea in my head of a cookie that would sound amazing and then I go to work creating it with the look I envisioned with the right ingredients. If I see something that looks tasty, I will take I inspiration from that by combining it with other flavors in a unique way. The biggest challenges I have overcome are fear. Fear of failure mostly. That someone will not like what I create. I’ve had to tell myself that I am doing this mainly because I enjoy it. Not everyone will be my customer and you know what…that is completely ok. Everyone’s tastes and what they consider beautiful are unique to them. This is what I find to be gorgeous and delicious to me. I share that with the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh boy! I’d definitely start by taking my beastie to Meow Wolf because that’s a truly amazing experience. I don’t know that you can find all of its secrets ever, but it’s definitely fun to try! I would introduce her to Liz from Leashes by Liz because she’s a truly awesome person with an great work ethic and small business. My friend would love to buy a leash and some paw wax from her for sure. We would eat dinner at The Juicy Seafood. That place is so good. A great boil feast with shrimp and lobster. You may be messy afterwards, but that’s how you know it’s good! The farmer’s markets out here that I am a vendor at would definitely be a stop on the tour. The amazing people and local products are a must! She has to try the Pueblo Chillies and Palisade Peaches! Overall Farms has the most amazing meats. We would grab some peaches from Forte Fruits, some grilling meats, and some produce from Palazzi Farms and have a BBQ at my parents house. The last stop would be Garden of the Gods and a concert at Red Rocks. You can’t come to Colorado without seeing its natural beauty.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family honestly. Each one of my aunts, my mothers sisters, and my mother all contributed something unique to me. I am and only child and for 16 years, I was the only grandchild/niece on my mother’s side. Each one of my aunts helped raise me in their own way and taught me something about myself. My mother is determined, fierce, and also a bit stubborn. I have huge goals and I don’t give up. I attribute that to her. My aunt Laura is very religious and so empathetic. I was able to learn and keep an open mind about all religions because of her plus hone my empathic nature. My aunt Kimmy is the wild child of the bunch. She taught me to embrace the crazy, fun, and tell it like it is. My aunt Tammy is the problem solver, the nerd/geek, the logical one. She taught me to be myself always. I have had many a discussion with her on several topics. I, too, am also nerdy/geeky and we enjoy that very much together as well. With all their powers combined, I was formed. I would not be the woman I am today without them. I love them all very dearly and I hope I can teach my children every bit as well as they did me.
