We had the good fortune of connecting with David Avrin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
It’s become very trendy to repeat the nonsense that “everything you want in life is on the other side of fear.” People aren’t afraid of being physically fit, or being successful in business, or having healthy relationships. Most things that you want are on the other side of hard work and intention. Unfortunately, people will always look for the short cut or magic pill. It doesn’t work that way and it never has. You have to do the hard work and keep at it. As they say: There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an international business speaker and strategic consultant. To be clear, I’m not a “motivational speakers” and I bristle at the term. I teach organizational leaders and teams to future-proof their business model by becoming ridiculously easy to to do business with.

After spending my early career in marketing and PR and performing with a popular a cappella singing group at night, it was a natural fit to end up on stage for my career.

Now, nearly a quarter century as a full time business speaker and consultant I am fortunate to travel internationally and have spoken to audiences in 26 countries around the world…so far. As difficult as travel has become, I am incredibly privileged to work in cities that most dream of traveling to. In fact, my mother passed away at only 69 years old never having owned a passport. I don’t take my opportunity to travel globally for granted.

The biggest challenge I have found for myself and for those who I work with is a never ending process of staying current and relevant. It requires constant work to learn, apply, revise, enhance and learn some more. What was true 20 years ago no longer is. What worked just five years ago, in many cases no longer applies.

I think it’s important to be a life-long learner and read books. In fact, I have written 5 business books and one “sappy dad” book myself. As I get older (turning 60 this year) I’m committing myself more and more to mentoring others on their journey. There is a famous assertion that says: “For those of us who have enjoyed a measure of success, it’s important that we send the elevator back down.”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You can’t visit Denver without making a pilgrimage to Red Rocks. Ideally for a concert, but also for the views at the very least. My 23 year-old daughter lives across from Coors field and frequents the nightlife downtown. (I did in my youth as well.) Today, I’m less about blaring music and more about lively conversation. I take out-of town guests to roof-top restaurants to enjoy blue skies and mountain views, to Rockies games for a lazy day of food, sun and conversation. A quick drive to Evergreen to walk the main street and grab lunch offers the mountain experience, but with an easy trip back to Denver. Looking forward to revisiting my childhood at the new Casa Bonita, albeit with better food this time around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s been said that if you see a turtle on a fence post, you know it didn’t get their by itself. I’ve had great mentors and champions at every stage of my career. By the same token, I’ve had a few terrible bosses. I’ve learned from all of them.

My biggest shout out goes to my late father Philip Avrin, an actual rocket scientist who never really understood what I did for a living, but was proud of me anyway. He taught me early by his words and deeds how a father steps-up and does what is necessary to take care of his family. I remember lamenting to him many years ago that I had been struggling with a new business and my kids’ sports schedule was overwhelming. His response was what it always was: “I know you’ll figure it out,” he would say. “Because you’re the Daddy and that’s what Daddy’s do.”

Now, we are empty-nesters with five kids grown and gone. Over the years, I worked hard to instill that sense of purpose and responsibility in my kids as well.
