We had the good fortune of connecting with David Crane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Trusting the process. Starting a business on your own can be scary. It’s the thought of the unknown. You have to be willing to take a chance on yourself. I decided that I would invest in myself and put what I believed I could do, into action.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a creative since I was a kid. I was always drawing or crafting something. Art has been a passion of mine forever. As I grew up and technology changed, I started learning the digital form and how to produce on that medium. I studied multimedia graphic design at PPCC, which gave me tools to eventually start a clothing line. The journey to this point wasn’t as hard as it could’ve been because I educated myself. I still learn new things everyday. When challenges arise, I research solutions. It’s all about trial and error. Eventually I’ll figure it out. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve literally done everything myself. I do all of the designs, I print, and I press. I like this because I have full control over what gets put out. I want the world to know that I’m just like everybody else with a dream. I didn’t come from money or chances. I took a risk and it’s paying off.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My city is growing so much. We have a lot of cool things to do. This wasn’t the case not to long ago. I don’t eat out often, but some of the best food I’ve eaten comes from the street trucks! This is the best after a night out. The night life is nice with clubs and hole-in-the-wall bars. You’ll be able to catch local entertainment. We have fun things to do like top golf, go karts, arcades. Everything you would like to do, you would be able to find.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to shout out my community. I’ve been in my area for a long time, and I’ve met a lot of amazing people along the way. Once I started my clothing line, my community backed me up. I was invited to events, and given opportunities that otherwise may have been difficult if it weren’t for the people around here. Also, a book that inspired me was “This is not a T-shirt” by Bobby Hundreds. I loved hearing his journey from beginning to end. It helped jump start what were just thoughts, into viable actions. Last and certainly not least, my mom and daughter. They are the fuel that keeps me going.
