Meet David Gannon | Portrait and Corporate Photographer/Social Media Manager

We had the good fortune of connecting with David Gannon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It all started from drawings I did as a kid. My parents were big supporters of my creativity. I would sit all day drawing these intricate TeePees and pictures of whatever the infatuation of the week was. I would draw birds, trees, race cars, and a lot of Kiss (the band) members.
After graduation, I struggled to find a college that fit well, and I was discussing this with my parents and my mom said “David, you used to draw ALL the time, you would be really good as an artist for Rolling Stone magazine.” I was dating a girl at the time who’s cousin worked for Rolling Stone, so I reached out to him and asked how he got his start. He said art school! So….within 4 months I had found a school, applied, got it, and the rest is history. Well, not really.
I went to art school, graduated, and this was just at the point where computers were making their way into schools and businesses. I took a class on graphic design and was hooked. The whole creative process, being able to change colors and shapes without erasing was huge for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Since high school I have been taking pictures of everything. I was the one with the camera. It may have been an old Kodak disc camera but it fit in my jeans jacket pocket and went everywhere with me. It wasn’t until my first kid was born though, that I decided to take it to the next level. I upgraded from a Canon Rebel to a Canon 7D. It was overwhelming at first, so I bought a book, started doing some online lessons and watching other people shoot. Within a few months of perfecting my style and of asking around to neighbors and friends, I got my first real photoshoot. They were my guinea pigs but amazingly the photos turned out great. They were repeat customers for years. I have since upgraded again to a better camera, and now get lots of leads off my website form, some advertising on social media and lots of word of mouth. I also try to give back as well, by offering my photography services to non-profits. My days are filled taking corporate photos for companies, senior photos and family photos sessions. It’s the one thing I feel totally confident in my abilities and with every session I edit, I get more excited and compound what I learn every day. I cannot wait to do another shoot. The feeling seeing my clients reactions when I deliver their galleries is something money can’t buy. People tell me “Dave, you just know how to capture our spirit and who we are!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1) First we would head to my backyard. I love our yard. We had it redone about 4 years ago, and it is our oasis in the city. We’ve got a big patio, and a stock tank pool! Then we would head over to Denver Beer’s Beer Garden on South Downing. That place is the coolest, with such cool staff and music! We’d grab a bite to eat there as well cuz they have an eclectic selection of food.
Day 2) I love the light rail so we’d hop on and take it downtown to LoDo area. Since they shut down Larimer St. we’d walk around, maybe listen to some free music and grab a coffee or drink and meander the neighborhood.
Day 4) If they weren’t sick of drinking, we would head to RiNo area and do a brewery crawl and test all the different types of brewskies.
Day 4)Can’t pass up a chance to show them Red Rocks.
Day 5) We’d head up to the mountains and I would show them Frisco, and Lake Dillon.
Lastly we would be head to the new Meow Wolf exhibit downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Aside from my parents being such huge proponents of my creativity and pushing me to harness those talents, I want to shout out to some of my past designer coworkers and photographers on Instagram. During stints at different ad agencies I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting some of the most talented designers, be it web, print or even coders. Their passion and dedication to their art was what inspired me the most to become an even better designer. They selflessly helped me look at things in a different way, try new approaches, and look beyond just the computer screen and mouse. Jump to the last 10 years and I am blown away by the creativity and inspiration that Peter McKinnon from YouTube, and handful of photographers that I follow and converse with on Instagram. They by far have kept me motivated and building my business.
