We had the good fortune of connecting with David Swartz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is an unavoidable part of life. I think the idea of picking a risk free career, or avoiding risk in general is a myth. Covid certainly revealed how fragile our security is. That said, I definitely don’t take reckless gambles with my career or life. But there is a certain level of risk involved with being self employed that someone under contract or working for a firm doesn’t experience. I feel the biggest risks for me are how to invest my time and energy. The vast majority of work I apply for, I get rejected from. Countless hours writing proposals, listing products online, taking meetings for perspective projects, etc. The amount of tasks to accomplish, leads to follow up on, or platforms to maintain is endless. The one activity I never feel is risky to invest in is my artwork, that will always help me move forward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born, started drawing a gang of years later, struggled with being a human, wanted to die, started doing drugs, felt better, then felt much worse, got sober, found recovery, felt really crazy, then felt a bit better, slowly, slowly, very slowly, grew into a human than didn’t struggle being a human as much. Huzzah! Here I am now, I may have left out that fact that I painted and painted, and drew, and found solace in my creative practice along the way. To say a little something about that creative practice…

I work with various water based paints to create bright and energetic artwork with a humorous twist. I strive to use art to create beauty and connection. Connecting people with each other, nature, and themselves. These connections are what enrich the world, and create a sense of unity that helps dissolve the isolation, hate, and selfishness that pollute so many people’s lives. If I wasn’t painting, I’d be dying…well dying at a quicker pace that is. Huzzah!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lucina Eatery! Bon Chon Chicken! The 49th! Cheif Mountain! RiNo for aimless wandering and more breweries than people.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Psh, who doesn’t! Maybe that sounds cliche but I couldn’t survive without the support of everyone out there contributing to society. From the maintenance person to makes sure my electricity is on, to the close friend who consoles me when I’m losing my mind I need other people to be happy, healthy, and alive.
