We had the good fortune of connecting with Deneishia Leartiste and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deneishia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I feel like I spent a lifetime fulfilling other people’s dreams and expectations. Working for someone else, I was achieving their creative goals, I was contributing to their financial success and I was too tired after working all day for someone else, to put in the time to invest in my own goals and dreams. I am committed to investing my time and energy into myself, my goals, my dreams, my success. Starting my business was, for me, the ultimate show of my faith in myself, the ultimate proof of commitment to myself..
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I write poetry, fiction, non fiction, screenplays, stage plays as well as paint, cook, and I am a musician. My work revolves around the mental health journey and how creativity brings us back to balance and closer to our source and purpose. Every project has a book, an album, a menu, and a set of paintings or film revolving around a single topic so that every aspect of the topic (how it feels, tastes, looks, and sounds) are represented. Art is my ministry and my creations reflect that idea.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a great question! Depending on the time of year, I would take my friend to a tour of my favorite farmer’s markets and stock the house with gorgeous organic foods and spend our days going to every museum in Denver, tour the murals and statues in the city, every night I would make a decadent meal and dessert from the food we bought at the farmer’s markets and make sure to tour the open mics that week starting with the Corner Beet on Mondays and the Mercury Cafe. I would end the week with a drive up to the national forest and making sure to drive up to Garden of the Gods sometime during that week just to show off Colorado’s beauty.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my friends. I am surrounded by chosen family who are invested in my health, my stability, and support my dreams. When I was ready to give up on life and suicide seemed like my only option, my friends were there to help me find the resources I needed, gave me the safety and support I needed and held my hand through all of the stages of recovery and healing to support me when I needed it the most. They taught me I was worthy of living, I was worthy of being loved, I am where I am today because this group of people showed me my value and gave me back my life and the passion to live it. I would be dead if it weren’t for my friends. Thank you to all of you, thank you.
