We had the good fortune of connecting with Denham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denham, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly things kind of took a life of their own. There will come a point in time where you decide if a hobby is just a hobby or, if you want it to be something else!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel what separates my art from others is the process in which I make it. Music is one of the hardest businesses because nobody really NEEDS your music. You’re literally organizing sound and thinking “How do I get the world to hear it?* The biggest challenge to overcome with music is not to quit. Doing what you love is easy, but life can hit you like a ton of bricks. Often time life is what ends up separating you from your dreams.
Coming from a small town it’s always tough to make it in art. Not only that but making a style that’s not liked by the majority makes it even rougher. I’m most proud of our perseverance and my song “Overcast” featuring P.O.S of Doomtree surpassiing one million plays on Spotify! Coming from a small city in the midwest we’ve been able to perform with artists like, Kid Ink, Kevin Gates,, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, B.o.b, Bryce Vine, and many more. Playing at venues across the country like the Hard Rock Cafe in Vegas, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, House of Blues New Orleans, Viper Room in Los Angeles, and even the Atlanta Hip Hop festival. Most of these places I had never seen in person until music brought us there!
I’ve learned mostly that everything you learned as a kid was true. Be punctual, presentable, friendly, and prepared. These subtle things really set you up to capitalize on any opportunities. And if you fail, just know you that maybe it wasn’t the right opportunity for you!
If there was anything I wanted the world to know it’s going to be left in my music. A dream without a plan is just a dream. Be you, be art, be life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends came to town I’d often take them wherever the live music is! Sioux Falls has plenty of places to eat having one of the most restaurants per capita in the nation! You can often go downtown and a lot of what it has to offer is within walking distance!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is a tough question since the music business is a business based off relationships. Many people have to come together to make an artist successful. They come into your life in many unexpected ways. Although I don’t think I could name them all I definitely have to shout out a few!
My mom has to come first. She always allowed me to do whatever I was passionate about. Although she may have had an opinion, she always approached in a caring manner and pushed me to be my best. I’ve relied on her for many times life has brought me to a low point. This can go a long way in a career that is such a rollercoaster ride!
Corey Vasquez is my ride or die. We’ve been through the trenches together. This man has unselfishly helped me for years now! Love you man!
Bill Law was my bass guitar instructor when I was in college at NDSU. He was one of the first people that showed genuine belief in my potential as a musician. Although I wasn’t the greatest student, he made me feel like I could be someone. To be honest I don’t think I would have been down this path if it wasn’t for his subtle mentorship.
Shane Funk, Andy Young, and the Judd Hoos crew. This band really took me under their wing and has helped me grow tremendously as a musician. The best part about our relationship is that we became close naturally and we’re friends for quite some time before they offered to work together. It was such a natural and genuine encounter and I feel like they’ll be in my life forever!
Matt Hastad, Tyler Jeppersen and Remedy Brewing. This local Sioux Falls business was one of the first to work with us. It was one of my first encounters with a local business that was willing to work with us. Their charisma, intellect, and overall great personalities helped show me how to work with the community and find ways to share your value!
