We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Dames Ohl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derek, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
All the good ones! In the music world, creating good habits is imperative to your career whether you’re just starting out, or if you’ve been playing for years. Also as you get older, its easy to get distracted by the world, so I think keeping yourself to a schedule of practice is imperative to keeping yourself fresh and ever growing!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve dreamt of the music life as far back as my first AC/DC CD’s and live DVD’s. Ive always been a dreamer, and I feel it necessary to at least try to chase them. Being born and raised in the Boulder area inspiration is hiding around every corner. I’ve played bass in local Rock N’ Roll outfit Flash Mountain Flood, for the better half of the past decade and have really made a good understanding of what it takes to be a musician. There’s so many different stages of the profession as well, I am in no way a household name when it come to the songs I write, but can play enough local bars and festivals mixed with a little bit of work in between, and that pays the bills and puts the right kind of food in my belly at the month, which blows my mind every day. I think one thing I’d want to tell my younger musician self is, don’t ever compare yourself in negative ways to others in your field, we all have our own story, and remember its not a speed race but a race of endurance, don’t burn out and have fun along the way!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Go to the Pearl St. Pub in Boulder, or hang out near Confluence Park in Denver. Rockmount in downtown Denver is the oldest western wear store standing in the states, always worth checking out!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to John Prine
