Meet Devonna Mendez | Owner of Diamond Beauty Bar and Microblading Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devonna Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devonna, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risks has been a crucial part to my success. With that said, you must know the difference between taking a risk blindly versus taking a calculated risk. Every risk that I have taken has been calculated through critical thinking.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the CEO and owner of Diamond Beauty Bar. We are a Beauty Bar that offers a unique experience by providing a variety of beauty services including hair, skin, teeth whitening, microblading, and lash services. What sets us apart is our environment which is peaceful and your service is personalized. Each service is provided with great care while focusing on our client’s needs and ensuring each and every client is satisfied.
I started this journey in 2008, by attending beauty school for cosmetology. After beauty school, I found myself divorced with two kids which was a very challenging time for me. I started my career working in a Salon at Walmart making basically minimum wage. I had to get a second job just to make ends meet. My second job was doing Valet in the evenings. At one point my kids and I had to sleep on the floor in my cousin’s finished basement. At this stage of my life, I realized there was no easy answer to my situation. I had a choice to make. Using my daughters as my motivation, I focused on building a clientele and perfecting my craft. At the first opportunity, I took a leap of faith and began renting a booth at an established salon. I had to deal with the fear of leaving an hourly job to only making money when I had a client. I was all in and ready to get a second job if necessary. My strategy at this time was showing up whether I had clients booked or not. I knew I had to capitalize on every opportunity that came my way. Being consistent and reliable allowed me to continue to grow and flourish. Over the next several years, I began to focus on acquiring new skills which included Microblading, Teeth Whitening, Permanent Make-up and Lash Extensions. I recognized that I was outgrowing my environment and it was time to take the next step towards my success. My kids were getting older and I was now married to an incredible man. I had developed the desire to someday own my own Salon. In March of 2021, I was opening my own business “Diamond Beauty Bar”. This endeavor was very scary but I soon learned that it was God’s plan because everything came together extremely fast. We have now been open for over 2 years but I’ve continued to look for ways to elevate my business to take it to the next level. Recently, I pursued learning how to build a brand through marketing. In addition, I am developing an online Microblading course to help others build expert skills. I’m incredibly grateful that I wasn’t afraid to take risks and make my dreams come true. It definitely wasn’t an easy journey but the journey is what made it worthwhile!
Can’t wait to see what’s next!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anytime I have anyone visit me from out of state, I like to go eat at Santiago’s or Chubby’s. Absolutely love this restaurant called Oregano’s. We would have to take them to go get some food at Beyond Thai because they’re sticky rice and papaya salad is incredible. I like to take them to Blackhawk because it’s such a beautiful drive and a cool experience. Along with red rocks and one of my favorite places to take people is Casa Bonita because how many restaurants have a waterfall in the middle of them where people cliff dive. Then for an evening out Avante would be really cool place to take them it’s a very unique place that has all different types of food and it’s a good place to have some cocktails!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank God with God all things are possible, My Dad (Ken Martinez) for mentoring me, My Husband (Rojelio Mendez) for supporting me and My Kids (Celica and Porscha) for being my motivation to follow my dreams!
