We had the good fortune of connecting with Divine Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Divine, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music was something that I’ve always gravitated to, even at a young age. When I started making it myself, it just felt like I found the final piece to the puzzle that I had been looking for in my life and I never looked back. Music has taught me patience and has given me purpose and the DVNEHPPY project has allowed me to experience things in life that I didn’t think were possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a recent, one of the things that I’m most proud of is the ‘W.O.A.H Tour’ that I just wrapped up. Not only was this tour put together entirely by myself, but I was able to ensure that all the artists that were apart of the tour were paid for their time and accommodated accordingly. I know that seems like something that should be a general standard, but being an upcoming artist in today’s day and age, it doesn’t always pan out like that for us so to be able to to successfully coordinate a tour by myself and ensure everyone is getting paid also is a blessing in itself.
Being a student of the industry first is how I feel like I’ve gotten to the point where I’m currently at, and how we will continue to scale the DVNEHPPY project. I haven’t taken business classes, and been under mentorship. Everything that I’ve learned has just been from being in the same room as the people I want to learn from and listening. Getting in front of those people hasn’t been an easy task by any means but if this were easy, why would any of us that truly WANT, do it in the first place. The reward at the end of the day is seeing the hard work come to fruition and getting that gratification through that.
The main thing I’ve learned is: be patient & remain humble. Give credit where its due but don’t be afraid to give yourself some credit as well. If there’s one thing you can take away from my journey, it’s that persistence is indeed key and believing is only a small percentage of the battle. Follow your beliefs up with action as well as a want to constantly learn and you are guaranteed some form of success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I just love being in Five Points – Denver. I think anything in that area can provide an amazing time if you’re looking for something to do in the city. I love going to The Marigold as well as Meadowlark. I’m still learning my way around Denver so if anyone has any recommendations I’m definitely all ears haha.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout everyone that has been apart of the DVNEHPPY journey. Early in my career, I recognized that it was not just a “me” effort. I would not be at the point that I am if it weren’t for family, friends, fans, etc. believing in my vision and constantly encouraging me. That’s why: “There’s No ‘I’ In DVNEHPPY”.
Thank you to everyone who has ever believed in me, and helped me grow as an artist.
