We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Casey & Dr. Tommy Mathews, Carlson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Casey & Dr. Tommy, what do you attribute your success to?
We care for every body in the family, human and animal. Every species, every age; a one-stop-shop for wellness for everyone, which is convenient. From newborns to grandparents, dogs, cats, horses – even rabbits and llamas – if it has a spine, we’re here to optimize that being’s life, wellness, and function through the power of chiropractic.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Every chiropractor is different in how they practice. Our office prides ourself on being gentle and specific with care for the whole family. Dr. Tommy sees the human patients and Dr. Casey sees the animals. Oftentimes humans start care for themselves once seeing such an improvement in their pet, and many human patients get excited finding out we offer animal chiropractic because they know chiropractic’s benefits and want their pet to live and feel their best life. Or, someone they know is talking about their pet’s health and recommend our office because they know animals are seen in the room next door. We also see folks who maybe aren’t the biggest fan of animals or are fearful, we simply schedule them on the days that Dr. Casey travels to the horse patients at their barns and no animals come in the office those days.

To get to where we are today, we stumbled across a fantastic opportunity while in chiropractic school to take on an existing practice from a doc that was retiring, seeing both humans and animals. Business classes in school would talk about how a situation such as this is ideal, and this opportunity was presented to us unexpectedly! We moved to Colorado Springs from Atlanta just after finishing chiropractic school and at this point we have more than doubled the patient base within the last 2 years, which is exciting that chiropractic is reaching that many more people in the community. Being a niche office offering animal chiropractic has been huge for our exposure just from an internet search, but many of our new patients are coming from word of mouth referrals.

Aside from still learning the ins and outs of real life business and all of the quarterly taxes and yearly forms and fees that need to be paid, we have learned to leave the work at the office when we are done. When you work and live with your partner, sometimes work can come home with you, even if you love talking about the cases and diagnoses and treatments and exercises and all of the things, we need to have some space from that to reset and be fresh for the next day. We love having hobbies and adventures outside of work to help give us other outlets and make our life rich and satiating.

We love sharing chiropractic with the community and educating on health and wellness. Dr. Casey is especially passionate about making sure those that are interested in animal chiropractic find a practitioner that is certified in animal chiropractic by either the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA) or the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) to ensure your pet receives quality and educated care. We also want you to know that chiropractic does not have to be aggressive or rough, the nervous system and our bodies respond best when treated gently. Cheers to our health and highest potential!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado Springs combines some of the best aspects of a mountain town and a growing big city. If the outdoors are your thing, you can’t miss the chance to hike through Garden of the Gods. Or if you’re up for more of a challenge, you can try conquering the Manitou Incline, a trail that takes you up over 2,000 feet of elevation gain in less than a mile. You can count the individual steps on the way up, there’s over 2,700 of them. After working up an appetite I’d head downtown to White Pie to enjoy their New Haven and Sicilian style pizzas and great cocktails. Their in-house made lemoncello is fantastic and we’ve yet to find a pizza on the menu that hasn’t blown us away. After that I’d finished off the evening by heading a few blocks over and catching our local professional soccer team compete, the Switchbacks FC, as the sun sets behind Pikes Peak.

If you prefer to experience more of the cultural side of things or if it’s approaching 0°F outside, there are plenty of indoor options as well. Some of our favorites include going to see the Colorado Springs Philharmonic perform, exploring local boutiques and outdoor gear shops, and finding hidden speakeasies. Regardless of the time of year you come visit, remember to give yourself time to acclimate to the elevation before going too hard on the trails and definitely drink your water.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dr. Casey: I absolutely owe so much of where I am today to my mom and my beloved horse, as well as every other animal I have ever had, currently have, or will have in the future – my passion and work is driven by the love these critters provide. All of my professors throughout my schooling, especially chiropractic school at Life University, have impacted me and been great inspirations in how I represent and share chiropractic. Of course, I would not be able to live out this dream without my partner, Tommy.

Dr. Tommy: There are countless people and experiences that have helped lead me to where I am today. First I have to express my gratitude to my parents who were my first and, over the years, most consistent source of encouragement and advice as I traversed towards my goals both big and small. I’d also like to shoutout my coaches throughout the many seasons of lacrosse and soccer. Especially Coach Porter, who taught me not only the importance of leading by example but also a fascination of how well the human body can perform and what it can accomplish when working at its most efficient. It took me years to realize that’s what chiropractic truly means, it’s unlocking the power in the body by allowing it work at its most efficient. Lastly I have to mention my mentors in the chiropractic field, Dr. Will Middleton and Dr. Krantz, who taught me to see each patient for the individual themselves rather than just a list of symptoms and a diagnosis.
