We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Katie Woodley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Katie, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my business is never stopping. My mission is to ensure pet parents know they have options for their pet care. Because of this huge mission, I have to show up, create content and be vocal about the benefits and the positive changes that pets can experience when we integrate optimal nutrition, herbs, essential oils, and acupuncture into their lives. I’ve been in a similar position to many pet parents where I was told there was nothing more I could do from a conventional perspective for my German Shepherd with a brain tumor, but I was able to give him 11 more months of an amazing quality of life due to holistic medicine. But many pet parents don’t know this is even an option for their pet. Being an advocate for pets with a different way of thinking about health is important and necessary for improving pet health and longevity. 60% of pets will develop cancer. The conventional medical system is broken. The only way to change it is to show up, be present, and show pet parents and veterinarians that there is a better way to help our patients and pets when we integrate holistic medicine into our treatment protocols.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Realizing that the medical system was broken was not an easy path. After my husband developed an autoimmune disease in 2013, I watched as each doctor told him he could only do strong drugs and some even laughed at the idea of herbs and nutrition. However, through our own research, we were able to find another world of medicine that had helped millions in his position. Through that journey, I realized that I had been telling pet parents there were no other options when conventional medicine stopped working. I drew a line in the sand and became acupuncture certified and earned a graduate diploma in Chinese herbal medicine and never looked back. By helping patients holistically, I could now figure out the root cause of issues and resolve them through nutrition, herbal medicine, and acupuncture. I also gave back hope to many pet parents that there were no other treatment options left for their pets. But the journey was not easy. After working in a few different veterinary clinics as an integrative veterinarian, I came up against roadblocks with the conventional mindset of other vets. I realized to make the biggest impact for pets, I needed to create my own business where holistic medicine was the focus, and thus I started The Natural Pet Doctor. The Natural Pet Doctor is different than most veterinary businesses, because not only are we supporting pet parents through one-on-one services from a holistic approach, but we’ve created another side of the business that allows pet parents to empower themselves with a holistic education. Through our social media channels, eBooks, webinars, VIP Natural Pet Parent Club, and courses, we’re able to help people safely navigate through the holistic medicine world to help their pets thrive naturally. I’m so excited to see our community grow even further and to partner with other health professionals to ensure that people have a choice in the type of medicine they want for their pets. There’s been a lot of hours and time that have gone into creating the content alongside personal consultations, and it hasn’t always been easy. However, my love for educating and teaching is what makes it all worth it. Hearing the stories of how pets overcame chronic skin conditions or their GI issues went away by implementing our advice makes the long hours worth it every day. Having a support network and doing personal growth every day is what has helped me persevere through the difficult times. Joining business mastermind groups helped me think outside the box in growing my business and gain support to not feel alone in the journey. There are not many holistic veterinarians and there’s a lot of pushback from the conventional medicine side because we’re not taught this way of medicine in veterinary school. However, the impact we’ve been able to have on thousands of pets’ lives makes the journey worth it. Through The Natural Pet Doctor, pet parents have the ability to empower themselves to help their pets, regain hope again that there are other options, and prevent disease in the first place through nutrition and a holistic approach. We partner together with pet parents every step of the way and have options for everyone, whether they are a DIYer or want more one-on-one guidance. I’ve been there with my own husband and pets and know what it feels like to be told there’s nothing more you can do or be laughed at for asking about nutrition or herbal medicine. With our business, we’re creating a safe space for fur families to thrive and achieve optimal health through integrative medicine.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To the mountains we go! I’m an outdoor, adventure girl. I went to veterinary school in New Zealand and it was the best adventure. Getting outdoors for hiking and fresh air is the number one thing I enjoy doing when I’m not working away. Summit County is one of my favorite places because there are so many trails to hike, skiing in the winter, and paddle-boarding on the lake in the summer. The mountain air is always rejuvenating.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Ryan, deserves a shoutout! He is why I started on the holistic path to medicine for pets after he developed an autoimmune disease back in 2013 and knew there had to be another way than just strong medications. Because of this experience, my eyes were opened to how I could help my own pet patients with a whole different world of medicine. Ryan has been with me every step of the way, especially supportive through the scary and unpredictable jump into owning my own business when I was doing well financially working for another veterinary clinic. With every up and down, he’s there to celebrate the wins and pick me up on the hard days that we all know as entrepreneurs. Without him, I would not be where I am today.
