We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kelly Swanson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Kelly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We wanted to make a difference in the community by providing the best chiropractic care possible that will in-turn provide long lasting results and better quality of life. Colorado Springs has a very active community that, for the most part, is very aware of their health and how to live proactive lifestyles which is why we were drawn to start our business here as compared to anywhere else.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My husband and I opened Corrective Chiropractic in December of 2019. What sets us apart as a chiropractic office is our specific focus on structural and posture correction. What makes me most proud is the dedication from our clients to have long-standing health and overall well-being. I am excited to be part of that journey and walk alongside them as they live better quality lives.

We have a business mentor which Dr. Josh and I both worked for in Atlanta that helped us get to where we are today business-wise. In Chiropractic school, you don’t quite learn the in’s and out’s of running an efficient business and that’s where he comes in. It has definitely not been easy. I would be shocked if any small business owner would say running a business is easy, but especially opening up right before the pandemic and managing all of that definitely threw us a little curve ball. We stuck to our values and our mission and wouldn’t have changed anything. I feel that made us stronger as a team.

Lessons I have learned along the way is stepping back and allowing others to do things. I am a busy body and I am the type of person that would rather just do everything myself and therefore I know it will get done the way I want it to be done. But I have learned after hiring our office manager, that it is ok for others to do things and you have to allow them to make those tiny mistakes to learn and continue to grow in their position.

I want the world to know that our office is built on long-term relief and results. We are family based and love seeing all those little kiddos running around the office all the way up to seeing those who are great grandparents. Improving our clients quality of life is the biggest goal so they can do the things they love for as long as they can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I haven’t lived here very long but some of my favorite places include Rampart Reservoir. We love to take the kayaks up there and just relax for a couple hours. We are big foodies so some of our favorite restaurants that we like to take our family and friends to are Denver Biscuit Company, Garden of the Gods Cafe, ViewHouse, Urban Egg, Walters 303, and any place that has good tacos. Tejon street is always a good time whether it’s during the day to shop the boutique stores or at night and visiting places like Coati. We also take new visitors to Garden of the Gods, that’s a must. I’d also take them down to Manitou and explore the shops there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our business mentor, Dr. Austin Cohen. Having started our business 3 months before COVID, we owe a lot to him and his circle of people and other doctors for sharing creativity and positivity during those months to get us through. Also credit to our family and friends that have been super supportive of every step in the journey of owning/running a small business.
