We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Sheila Tann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sheila, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The covid pandemic came with unprecented challenges in our personal and professional lives. The Health care industry shifted rather quickly to fully embracing telehealth technology for the delivery of virtual, in-home medical care. Although Telehealth has been around for many years, there was hesitancy on the part of providers, payors and patients to recognize the utility of the technology until covid .

In addition to the telehealth piece of my business, I’ve been interested in pediatric mental health issues for many years and focused on this within my primary care practice. Covid exacerbated the symptoms of many of these disorders such as depression and anxiety in children, Additionally, parents staying at home with their children full time also brought an awareness to many families that their children struggle with attention and that this is negatively impacting their success in school.

Basically merging the use of telehealth technology to increase accessibility to pediatric mental health care was the impetus to opening My Place Pediatrics.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve taken a bit of a circuitous route to where I am now. I started out in psychology and then decided to go to nursing school after I’d already gotten a bachelors degree. I pursued a doctoral degree in Nursing that enabled me to practice as an advanced practice nurse . After spending about 10 years working with adults in various settings I realized that my true passion was providing care to children and eventually pursued my masters certificate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Along the way I’ve taught countless students in nursing, public health, and medicine as a professor and clinical instructor.
I’ve dabbled in administration but always enjoy clinical work with children and families. They are my passion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love taking friends to a concert at REd Rocks or Chataqua up in Boulder. A float trip down a river and a dip in one of the many hot springs in the state is also a must.

Some of my favorite restaurants are Abejas in Golden, Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to my daughter. I’ve learned so much from being her mom. She’s made me a better person and a better clinician.
