We had the good fortune of connecting with Earl Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Earl, what principle do you value most?
Art or music in itself can be meaningless without a purposeful message. When songwriting, I can struggle giving a song a bigger meaning with lyrics and feel. If I settle with a message that is simple and easy to write, I feel like I fail that piece of music. Digging deeper into true opinions, even if controversial or unpopular is really important to me. The more I progress with my songwriting, the more and more I feel this way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s hard to emulate the early 20th Century blues and traditional Americana sound, but that music makes me feel like nothing else can. I wanted to show modern music lovers what makes music today so likeable, and it all came from those early country-blues players. Though the message may be overused, it’s never easy making original music. I might fail half the time, but I do strive to make a sound that is unique for listeners. I may hear something that inspires me to make a more palatable song every once in a while, but isn’t the whole point of this to widen the listeners range and taste? I want people who are blasted with the same music everyday from their local radio station or spotify algorithm to search for better music, not just settle for what’s fed to them. Regardless if my music qualifies for that, I still keep busy everyday thinking of new ideas and new arrangements that take that old country-blues sound to the 21st Century listener.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them straight to Golden, CO. We have climbing, tubing, drinks, live music, and beautiful scenery right there at the doorstep to the mountains. Golden is my favorite hangout in the Denver metro.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All members of Earl Nelson & the Company, and all the people who have helped us along the way. Greyson Medina, Will Scherman, Mike Garnier, Dave Geldert.
