We had the good fortune of connecting with Elianna Acevedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elianna, why did you pursue a creative career?
Curly hair is more than just a texture. For most people with curly hair it’s a lifestyle, attitude, and down right is a huge part of their confidence. I pursued becoming a Curly Hair Specialist because I was the little girl who had no clue how to manage my curls and it really affected me in the worst ways. No matter how much time I spent trying to straighten my curls the more I ended up hating them. After years of hearing my mom telling me to embrace them and love them I decided to give it a try. After that point I lived and breathed figuring out these crazy curls. The better I got the more I loved them! I got to this point where I decided if I just had one person who was able to guide me on my journey I wouldn’t have spent years hating something so important about myself. Then it clicked.. I would be the person every “Curly” would come to. I wanted to not only perfect my cutting skills for these amazing humans, I wanted to teach them how to love and take care of the crown they can’t take off! My mom was inspirational because no matter how straight her hair was she never gave up on trying to figure out how to make me Love what I was born with. I’m so lucky I pursued this career path because I’m making a difference in another little girls or boy’s life and maybe even a parent who desperately wants to show their child how beautiful and lucky they are to have this texture.

What I love about my job is how much passion I can put into every head of hair I work on. I stand out from the others because of that passion. I feel so much love for every client who sits in my chair. I am honored they allow me to create such beautiful art in their curls. I strive to make every client feel as beautiful as I know they are. I’ve learned so much being in this industry. Clients just want to be heard and related too. I learn just as much from clients as they do me, I love how we can focus on hair and talk about life. I’ve learned how beautiful people are in this world and how passionate others are about what they love, it keeps me motivated in all areas of my life! I think some lessons I’ve learned is that taking care of your body when you’re in an industry like this is just as important as any other aspect in the career. I spent my first few years as a hairstylist not going to the chiropractor and not wearing the right shoes and just doing things that we’re going to make things more difficult in the future in this career. I’m very thankful that I learned these lessons early and that I take care of my body now and wear the proper gear that I need to to continue to do this amazing career for the rest of my life.

What I want the world to know about my story is that I was just as confused about my curls in the beginning as most curly people are now. A lot of the people in this industry play with dolls and cut and styled their hair when they were younger. I absolutely went from hating my hair and having no confidence to loving my hair and having too much confidence (if that’s even possible). I lived through everything that I tell my clients to go through when it comes to healing your hair and healing your relationship with how you feel about it. I’ve done everything terrible to my hair just like I’ve done everything amazing to it. I’ve learned the hard way when it comes to my curls. And I wanna make this process and this amazing journey as easy and beautiful as possible for all of my clients. I am so very thankful to be where I’m at today. And I want everyone to know that I wouldn’t be here without you. And I am absolutely and completely honored for every client who sits in my chair!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places in beautiful Colorado is Redfeather Lakes. Everything from the gorgeous mountains to the water you’re bound to just vibe out and feel free. The moment that I get up there I have no stress, I have nothing to worry about and I would love to show that beautiful place to everyone I could. When we are coming down from the mountain the first place I would stop is G&B fish and chips! Literally the best fish and chips anyone will ever have in their life. And it’s not just basic, there’s more than just cod. My favorite thing to get there is the squid fish and chips!

There are many amazing places to get a good drink here in Colorado but I think my favorite place would be Wibby Brewery in Longmont! So many different refreshing beers and they always change up the activities they have outside. My favorite was when they had pools set up with all kinds of inflatable tube‘s and you could drink your beer and float. They also have a stage so you can enjoy all kinds of entertainment as well! Coming in second for drinks would be Bluemoon Brewery in Denver, they are a bigger company so the building is just beautiful! Big beer Tap made into a complete circle and chairs set up around it! They even sell beer there that isn’t sold in stores! If it were up to me and there was enough time in a week to check out all the local small mountain towns, that’s where I would be. You find the most wonderful little treasures in those tiny towns ❤️ One of my favorite little treasure towns is Manitou springs! Every time I go there I stay at the same motel in the same room. It’s my little Safe Haven (go visit the waterwheel in manitou!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Like in the previous question I talked a little about my mother and how her love for my hair changed my life for good. From the moment I understood my hair was different from everyone else’s she taught me how beautiful it was to have hair like mine. I remember her spending so much time researching other curly girls routines and buying me so many products to try to replicate these routines. I remember at one point she gave me a 9 product routine (which yes, is excessive.. but wow the love she showed me by doing all that). She would even let me take 2 hour long showers so I could figure out how to properly detangle and style my hair despite my dad being worried about our water bill. 😂 My mom deserves so much credit for helping me fall in love with not only myself but my hair. She’s a big reason I can help so many amazing people love what they were born with!
