We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Hulbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been the one behind the camera. More times than not, it was my iPhone, but I was known for being that friend/family member that captured all the amazing moments of any event, vacations, milestones of my kiddos, etc.. It wasn’t until a dear friend of mine expressed how successful she thought I could be if I started photography. With some hesitation, but drive, I jumped in feet first. I was coached, learned things on my own, and practiced to understand my equipment, and the art behind photography. I failed…a lot, but once I grasped the science behind all the settings, I was thrilled! This “AH HA” moment happened. I’ve always enjoyed capturing the moments that mean the most to people and being able to share those moments with them with my photographs. My job allows me to record special events, people, and places. Why not make it career? Why not create keepsakes they can cherish forever? Photography brings me excitement! I dig into my creative side, gain knowledge, and interact with amazing people! I’m also able to make my own schedule, allowing more time with my family. I’m able to travel and meet some amazing individuals along the way! It’s the best career I could ask for. I couldn’t imagine what life would look like without it!
What should our readers know about your business?
I strive to create timeless keepsakes that will bring you back to a happy memory each and every time. I want my clients to fall in love with my work as a Photographer. I have the ability to give an entirely new perspective on everyday life, and use my photographic skills to turn almost anything I find into a work of art. Was it easy? Absolutely not! It took studying, learning, coaching sessions, videos I watched to gain the knowledge needed to start. Not to mention, building the platform on social media sites that grab attention, build a clientele, create a website. I never saw myself as an entrepreneur, but here I was…forced to use business skills as well as my camera skills to create a thriving business. It took hours, long nights, trial and error. I failed time and time again. The lesson I learned is that I was doing this for the love of the art, not the amount of likes I had on any social media platform. I had to practice, practice, practice to be the best I knew to be. If I want anyone to take something from their time with me at the end of their session, it’s to be authentic. Always be yourself. Express yourself. Have faith in yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, my! The place’s we’d go! Colorado Springs is loaded with some of the most beautiful places! We’d visit Garden of the Gods, specifically High Lookout Point. The views of the mountain range at sunrise is perfect! We’d grab a quick breakfast at New Day Cafe off DelMonico to enjoy a breakfast cocktail before spending the afternoon through Cheyenne Cañon. We may hike to a summit or two, or Helen Hunt Falls for a small photo op at the base of the waterfall. For lunch, we’d visit Rudy’s BBQ, as we both love a good brisket sandwich, and sit and enjoy the mountain landscape from the patio. If luck were to have it, we’d venture to Denver and have dinner on Larimer Street before watching the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field (Huge baseball fan, here). We’d stay at the Rally Hotel for the evening and wake to grab breakfast at The Lobby. Heading back to Colorado Springs, we’d stop in Castle Rock to shop the Outlet Mall for all the deals! Grab a quick lunch and make our way to Manitou Springs, visiting the shops down Manitou Avenue! Dinner would be enjoyed at ViewHouse off Woodmen to enjoy the sunset from the outdoor seating. We’d spent time downtown Old Colorado City, and Colorado Springs to enjoy a cocktail or two at places like Coati, Oskar Blues, and Allusions. We’d visit brewery’s around Colorado Springs, and have lunch at Trinity Brew located off Garden of the Gods Rd. We’d finish off the time together soaking up the beauty of Colorado visiting Pikes Peak and taking selfies at the summit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Whitney Thetford with Homeland Photography deserves the loudest, most amazing shoutout! I owe her everything! Without the push, coaching, teaching, tag-a-long second shooter opportunities, I would have fallen flat on my face. She talked through settings, discussed with me how to pose people, get them comfortable in front of a camera, put me in situations that may have been uncomfortable that forced me out of my comfort zone with the realism of being a photographer. She’s shown tough love that was some of the most amazing advice I will take with me throughout this career.
My husband, Zach Hulbert — My rock. My cheerleader. My Partner. He has reminded me day after day that he is so incredibly proud of me. He celebrates me, he challenges me to push myself when I feel overwhelmed. He isn’t afraid to tell me what he thinks is best if it makes me a better person each and every day. He’s passionate about my love towards photography, and helps me whenever and wherever he can, even with tackling our three kiddos and his full time job with crazy hours. Without him, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I can’t be thankful enough.
