We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. My upbringing had a tremendous impact on my life as it was pretty traumatic to say the least. I’ve always searched for an outlet that allowed me to heal and bring me joy. Picking up a hoop for the first time did both of those things.

I started hooping in 2016, I was working at Goodwill at the time and I would come across all kinds of hula hoops that were donated. I thought they looked pretty and fun so I would play with them at work and take some home. I would look up beginner tutorials online and practice in my living room. I felt like I needed in person lessons and to connect with another. I reached out to a local hooper who sold me my first hula hoop and taught me a lot, that has helped me with flow journey.

Hula hooping has impacted my life in so many wonderful ways! I have made so many new, positive friends who share the same passion. It’s a great form of exercise, it has helped me express myself through movement and has done wonders for my mental health. It has also opened up a couple doors for me in becoming a certified hoop love coach and an insured fire performer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my hula hooping journey in November 2016. Flow arts changed my life. I don’t know where I’d be without it. Honestly I wish I discovered it sooner, would of helped me so much when I was younger. Flowing makes me become my real form. I can forget about anything, just focus on my movement, my breath, just being present. I love getting lost in the flow state. Flowing has also introduced me to so many amazing humans and helped me meet the bestest friends I’ve ever had! I think everyone should do something that helps them move and just decompress from reality. I think it’s cool that you can flow with anything! Shoot I’ve flowed with my dogs leash, a pot, a bag, anything! And no matter what prop, it’s still fun and cool! Wow! There’s just so many great things about flow arts!
I believe flow arts can help the community by bringing people together and connecting. Supporting each other, teaching, healing, and having fun together. I love that anyone can be involved in the flow community! I will continue to connect and help others with their flow journey. I will flow till I die.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my troupe, Sabba Circle. We collaborate with other local artists in the community, host fire jams, and provide fire safety courses for new artists interested in learning about flowing with fire. My troupe has boosted my confidence and creativity, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without their outpouring of love and support. I am so grateful to make these connections with amazing, talented people.
