We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Yurth, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, what principle do you value most?
Our Medical system is broken. Healthcare is not healthcare but rather sickcare. It is designed to help you if you have a catastrophic injury or illness but not to get healthy and improve healthspan! This problem is compounded by the fact that iot takes an average of 17 years for new medications, and technology to get into the hands of the typical medical doctor. So much of the truly life changing things are stuck in red tape and byt the time they get to you are already outdated. AT Boulder longevity Institute, our mission is to bridge the gap between research and clinical medicine and to empower people with the knowledge they need to take control of their health! This is so incredibly important if we ever hope to change a broken healthhcare system!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I spent most of my life in the world of orthopedics. As a fellowship trained Sports Medicine Physician, I worked for almost 30 years alongside my orthopedic colleagues treating joint and spine pain and injuries.. As time went on, I became increasingly disillusioned with what we were doing. The typical orthopedic treatments of PT, Steroids, and finally surgery really weren’t “”fixing” anybody. Moreso, we just kept patching people together but never really making them whole again! I began to look for what was missing and realized that joints and spines were really just a symptom and unless we treated the whole person, not just the knee or shoulder or back, we were not going to make people truly healthy. So 17 years ago I went back to school. I completed fellowships in longevity and regenerative medicine as well as epigenetics. I learned how hormones, genetics, nutrients, cardiometabolic health and chronic inflammation all play a role. Realizing that trying to address these issues in my 15 minute insurance based appointments was impossible, Boulder Longevity Institute (BLI) was born! BLI uses all of the most up to date, research driven tools at our disposal to evaluate and treat the whole person! This has not been an easy journey! I had a very busy, well established and financially successful orthopedic practice. But I finally realized that if I was going to do what was right, I must leave that behind and take the leap into something different. I also had to admit that so much that I had learned and done after 12 years of medical school and residency and fellowship was simply wrong and often did more harm than good. That is NOT easy!. And most of the traditional doctors do not want to hear that! So, I battled the status quo, found like minded people to learn and train with and have never looked back!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Boulder is one of the most amazing cities in the United States and I love to have people visit! As an advocate of real food and supporting those people who provide it, we always spend Saturday morning at the Boulder Farmer’s Market. Here you can get meat, fruit and vegetables from local ranches and farms. Next ,a stop at Boulder Creek to relax and eat some of the goodies we just purchased. Walking back home, we walk along Pearl Street pedestrian mall to watch the street performers and take in some of the unique shops.
Sunday morning, a favorite is to hike from Canyon Avenue over Flagstaff mountain. From the top, you can take in the amazing view of the CU campus and all of Boulder. The hike ends at Chautauqua dining Hall. Not only is Chautauqua full of history, but it has the most amazing outdoor patio with a view of the incredible Flatirons view while you eat healthy local food!
Boulder is known for health and wellness and so a visit wouldn’t be complete without hitting some of the regenerative therapies that I am so fond of. A Cryotherapy session at Restore has both healing properties and helps build resilience. It is such a great experience to realize you can withstand temperatures down to negative 200-300 ! We might include a little infrared sauna at CYL sauna.
And then off to Boulder Longevity Institute where we can partake in some unique IV peptide therapies to complete the healthy day!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shoutout Dr. William Seeds who is the most brilliant physician I have ever met and is the world exert in peptide therapies and understanding how we can utilize peptides and repurposed medications to alter cell pathways and markedly improve health. I must also recognize the group of like-minded physicians he put together as part of his Seeds Scientific Research and Performance (SSRP) faculty who have been and continue to be my allies in our mission to change medicine for the better!
