We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellen Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started out as a wedding photographer in 2018, my idea of success was to book as many weddings as possible, which sometimes meant shooting 2 or 3 weddings in one weekend. Any seasoned wedding photographer will tell you that this is not sustainable due to the amount of work that goes into a single wedding day. Now, my goal is to max out at about 25 weddings per year. Not only does this give me more time to spend with my family, but it allows me to give every couple that books with me a more personalized experience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a destination wedding and elopement photographer for non-traditional couples. I pride myself in creating unforgettable experiences for diverse couples in the world’s most beautiful locations. My career began after I survived a tragedy – the Las Vegas festival shooting – and was forced to leave my restaurant job. Fortunately, photography had been a hobby of mine since childhood and a source of income during college, so it was relatively easy for me to transition to doing photography full-time. I’ve learned that starting your own business is costly and challenging, but it is truly the most rewarding thing to be my own boss.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite part about Denver is the mountains to the west. The Rockies are some of the most popular elopement locations and have some of the best views in the United States.
