Meet Ellie Mckee | Portrait Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellie Mckee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve been obsessed with photography for as long as I can remember, so when I got my first real camera at 12 years old my passion for it skyrocketed. My favorite part of it has always been freezing these moments that you’ll never be able to replicate or relive except through photographs. Choosing to do photography as a career was one of the most natural decisions I have ever made because of my love for giving people the moments they will cherish forever. Shooting portraits is one of the most intimate art forms, because you are aiding and challenging your clients to accept the way they look when they express real and raw emotion and keep it forever, which I think is an extremely difficult thing to do in this day and age.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always loved looking through photos of my family and ancestors throughout the years, and I use them to get to know the people in them on a deeper level. I have grandmothers on both sides of family that were diagnosed with dementia, so photographs became one of the only things I could cling to as they slipped away. As I have developed my skills, my obsession has only grown, to get just the right frame to capture the emotion and love in each moment. I feel humbled and grateful every time I get to experience capturing someone’s true essence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I would give them a tour of the River North Art District first to give them a glimpse into the more artistic side of downtown. Then, I would whisk them away to downtown Golden and Arvada to let them experience the charm of the independent shops and restaurants. As the week draws to a close, I would bring them on my favorite hikes to places like Wonderland Lake, and Dream Lake to view the majesty of Colorado’s beautiful mountains.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother is the one who gifted me my first real camera which kickstarted my love and obsession with photography. She has supported me in all my artistic endeavors, as she is an extremely talented artist herself, and my biggest inspiration.
