We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilie Jimenez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emilie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Writing was in my bones!! I remember writing (and unfortunately also illustrating) a short book when I was in elementary school. I was captivated by the process and loved seeing the final product. Over the years, I received so much encouragement—from my high school English teachers, my college professors and writing advisor, my family and friends—that it was almost impossible to ignore this calling.
The written word has always been a powerful form of communication. Today, there’s so much content out there that it can feel impossible to find what’s true and good and right. I pursued writing first and foremost because I loved it and it has grown into something that I see as a necessity—to contribute accurate, captivating, and truthful words to this world is something I can do to make it a better place.

Freelance writing was my long-time side hustle, while I pursued other interests. After my daughters were born, I realized how much flexibility I could potentially have if I was willing to take a risk and go all in on freelancing. I officially launched my business in 2019 (though I had been writing under the radar for over a decade). I was confident that, with a bit of time and effort, I could build a lucrative business that would offer me the autonomy, flexibility, and creativity that I hoped for.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of relationships. I actually cannot say that enough. I’m no networker (in fact, networking events give me the heebie jeebies), but my writing business has been built from connections, word of mouth, dear friends, and random acquaintances.
More recently, I began freelancing for a publishing company as a ghostwriter and book coach. It has been such so much fun to work alongside authors to help bring their expertise and message to life (in book form). I learn so much about topics I would otherwise know very little about, and I feel like I’ve found a niche in the writing world that truly suits my skills and passions.
I love what I do—helping businesses, nonprofits, and individuals create amazing content that they are proud of. Someday, I would love to have a giant shelf of books in my library that I can say I helped write. I want to be a person that connects and empowers others to pursue their dreams and be the best versions of themselves. By the end of it all, I hope to still be surprised by and delighted in the humans I get to work with.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Day 1: Happy hour on my front porch, a walk around my ‘hood (Patty Jewett—it’s cute). A sleepover at Kinship Landing downtown.
Day 2: Hike or climb in Red Rocks Open Space. A big order of nachos from Alfonso’s on the way home. A Switchbacks soccer game in the evening.
Day 3-5: Buena Vista to raft and camp. Lunch on the river in Salida at Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop. K’s for milkshakes on the way home, of course.
Day 6: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to visit the hippos—I don’t care how old you are, it’s fun. Dinner in downtown Springs (The Well? Shame & Regret? Ephemera?).
Day 7: Coffee at Switchback (the old school one) on our way out of town. Tubing at Happy Meadows Campground in Tarryall. Dinner at Jose Muldoon’s (because their queso is still the best in town).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Magneti Marketing! They just came under new ownership, but the original founders—Jesse Marble and Adam Williams—took a chance on me back in the day and gave me my very first writing gig. It has been a privilege to write for this amazing company for over a decade. Their team is fun and innovative and really good at what they do, and they’ve made me a better writer.
